  • 1.  Unable to install SEP Manager - Hangs at database creation

    Posted Apr 17, 2011 08:19 AM

I'm trying to follow these steps, but cannot get past the point of creating the database.  It just hangs at the message

"The database is being created and initialized. This will take a few minutes"

Everything else in the steps below works fine, I'm just stuck at the end of step 5.

I'm installing on to fully updated Server 2008, with the Windows Firewall turned off, the SEP setup.exe run as Administrator from the installation DVD. I have installed the required elements of IIS etc.

One thing that's unusual about this installation is that I don't have any supplied license key, the (legitimate!) software house I've purchased from just gave us an installation DVD which I presume has the license key embedded into it.

    Installation logs below.

    Installation Steps I'm following

To configure the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager with an embedded
    database in Simple mode
1 On the Management Server Configuration Wizard page, select Simple, and
    then click Next.
2 Provide and confirm a password of 6 or more characters. Optionally, provide
    an administrator email address.
The password is the admin account password that you use to log on to the
Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console. The password is also used
as the encryption password necessary for disaster recovery and, if you are
installing Symantec Network Access Control, to add Enforcers. After
installation, the encryption password does not change, even if the password
for the admin account is changed.
Document this password for when you install Symantec Endpoint Protection
    in your production environment.
    3 Click Next.
4 On the Data Collection page, do one of the following:
    ■ To let Symantec Endpoint Protection send information about how you
use this product to Symantec, check the checkbox.
    ■ To decline to send information about how you use this product to
    Symantec, uncheck the checkbox.
5 The configuration summary page displays the values that are used to install
Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager. You can print a copy of the settings
to maintain for your records, or click Next.

Wait while the installation creates the database, which can take several

minutes.      (so far, it seems to get stuck on this step for at least 30 mins- 1 hr, at which point I have to cancel, remove the install including databases and try again)

6 On the Management Server Configuration Wizard Completed page, do one
    of the following:
Installing and configuring the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 67
Installing and configuring the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager with an embedded database
    ■ To deploy client software with the Migration and Deployment Wizard,
click Yes, and then click Finish.
    ■ To log on to the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console first, and
then deploy client software, click No, and then click Finish.

I noticed that after the removal of SEP, there were still some Symantec folder in the Program Files and Program Data folders.  I deleted these, including a troublesome quarantine folder that needed to have ownership taken of it before being deleted.

Also removed SQL from the server and HP SIM that was using it - in case that was having any effect.  As an aside, SIM has been a troublsome resource hog that we're dispensing with.

As it stands, we got past the database install step and have moved on to deploying SEP to the clients.

Currently, it is 'Creating Client Install Packages' which 'will take a few minutes'

It's been 15 minutes and I'm still waiting... and wondering if I've hit another install cul-de-sac  frown

EDIT:    Finally, it proceeded to the next step, and I've successfully deployed to the first test PC.  I think this is sorted out now, hopefully this thread might help anyone in a similar situation.

    Hello,

Are you installing SEPM with Embedded database or SQL Database?

If SQL,  The initialization of the database is the process in which SEP Manager starts creating the database and its tables on the SQL Server. There are couple things that can be checked.

    1. Check SQL Server actiivty monitor.
    2. Check SQL Server logs for any errors or deadlock.
    3. Check event viewer for any errors.

As the installation has not failed you might not find any errors in the install logs of SEP Manager.

Again, Where is the SQL Server installed "Locally" to the SEPM server or on a "Remote" location?

If on a remote server, this could be caused due to SQL Server Generated error "Insufficient System Memory".

    Solution

Reboot the Remote SQL Server will fix this issue however if the server is overloaded with other databases and the actual physical memory is less in that case hardware upgrade will fix the issue.

If you are installing Symantec Enpoint Protection Manager with Embedded Database, Cancel the SEPM installation, and then follow the steps provided in the below:

    1) Follow the Steps in the Article:

    Reconfiguring an embedded database

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO26898

    2) Run the upgrade.bat from C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin

    Hi Edanto,

In my case also it was failing while initilzation of database.

After removing all Symantec folders, I could reinstall SEPM.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the advice.  Actually, I didn't realise you had replied, and that's why it's taken me so long to come back.  I guess the default setting is for no email to be sent out when a reply is made to the thread - honestly guys that's a bit silly, maybe you should change it. (no sign of notifications in my spam) I've subscribed to this post in the options below, that might fix it up for me.

@Mithun, we are using the embedded database.  It seems to be working fine now - by all accounts it is a slow and old piece of software, and I find it a bit frustrating to use, but that seems normal from the other discussions I've read on the forum.    Thanks for the links, they will probably be of use to other struggling with this.

@Chetan, glad to hear that our method of deleting the Symantec folders before a reinstall helped you!
