  • 1.  Unable to map drive at Ghost DOS prompt

I'm trying to make a bootable USB thumbdrive that will automatically map a drive to a NAS box so I can back up several machines at once. I know I could use GhostCast but this is a temporary set up and will not have a machine available to run it.

I was able to key the thumbdrive made and partially working after adding the drivers for the machines that will be backed up but the problem is that the drive will not map. The folder security is set up and I've got the correct user name and password. When manually trying to map the drive, I get "Error 50". I can map the drive in Windows without any problems though. The NAS can also be pinged by name from the DOS prompt in Ghost.

    Any suggestions?

If your USB flash drive is booting PCDOS, are you loading the basic or the extended redirector?  If I recall correctly, you need the extended redirector in order to login.  It might be easier if you can configure your NAS box to share resources without having a login requirement, so that you can just map to the resource.

It is not that difficult to configure a WinPE boot for a USB stick and this gives you a much more comprehensive level of network support, so give some thought to this also.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the thumb drive was created using the PE environment, not PCDOS or MSDOS.

The NAS is a Buffalo LinkStation with 2TB of storage. I'm looking now but I don't see an option to allow access without logging in.

I have a Netgear ReadyNAS, and that allows me to configure shares that users can just map to, or use via UNC addressing,  without providing any specific user credentials. The only time I need a login is to administer the box.  Do you have the ability to configure shares on the Linkstation?  What networking protocols are enabled in the Linkstation?

I found a NAS that isn't a piece of crap but I'm having another problem now.

I've added the NDIS62 drivers for a ThinkPad T410 and X201 to WinPE but it's not loading when it boots from the thumb drive. I've tried the driver package for Win 7 and for XP with no success.

    Any ideas?

The version of WinPE used by GSS is V2.0, which is based on the VISTA kernel. The drivers you need to add to your WinPE boot environment much therefore be the Vista 32 bit drivers for the Thinkpad NIC and possibly the hard disk subsystem. Having said that, I found that WinPE V2 was pretty much compatible with the hard disk subsystems of all the various Lenovo models of desktop and laptop my client had back in 2009.

Upgrading to 11.5.1.2266 and adding the Vista NDIS61 drivers for the T400, T410 and X201 has resolved my issue.
