  • 1.  Unable to open a UMP file

After capturing a profile using the Symantec User Migration Tool, I am unable to open the .ump file in ghost explorer.  We have captured multiple profiles using the same tool with no issue.  It seems to be that the .ump file is corrupt.  Are there any tools out there that would allow me to extract the contents of this 4.3gb ump file?  How about any tools that will allow me to repair this file?

The version of the SUM Package Explorer is:  11.5.0.2113
The Error is: Not a User Migration Package

    Thanks

UMP is user migration package and ghost explorer will never open it. GSS provides Package explorer tool accessible right from the Console toolbar, right-click menu or you can use it manually. You can also use User migration wizard to open and browse package contents.

Another thing to note is that UMP is just a ZIP64 archive so you can open this file in any ZIP64 compatible program such as Winzip 9, Pkzip 6 or Winrar 8 (you may need to check on exact versions whether they support zip64 format). Mind you if your package is encrypted with password then you will be able to open it in ZIp64 compatible program but you will not be able to open any files and not even see file names - everything is encrypted.

Thanks for your reply Eugene -

I am using the explorer that comes with the SUM tool to open the package.  I can open all other packages I created, except this package.  The package IS password protected, and I do know the password.  usually when I open the pacakge with the provided tool, it asks me for the password, and when I put it in, I can see and extract individual files from the .ump package.  In this one case, I am getting the provided error message.  I tried opening it with WinZip9, but could only see one folder and there were no files within.  I will try again on Monday

    Hi Aaron,

SUM uses strong encryption with no "backdoors" so if you have lost your password you have lost package contents forever :( However we had a bug in gold GSS 2.5 in the case where one was mixing letter casing and I think SUM was lowercasing password. This was fixed in Live update 1 or 2. You can try running Live update and download all LUs. If your password was case-mixed you can try opening it with all lowercasing to see if this resolves your problem.

    Hi Eugene -
Again, thanks for your response.  I know the password for the UMP file.  It gets generated via script and then stored in a database, and I have access to see the password.  The problem is that when I try to open the .ump file, it does not ask me for the password.  It simply states that the file I am opening it not a user migration package (but it is).  I am using the command-line interface to the SUMWIZ.exe from a Visual Basic application.  All other files (I have created over 300) work just fine, it is just this one file that I cannot open.  Do you know if there is a version of winZip or some other tool that I can use to open the package if I know the password?

As I was saying that any ZIP tool that can handle ZIP64 (allows files over 4GB and archives over 4GB to be created) archives can open and view UMP packages (WInzip9, PKZip6, Winrar3.5 and so on). However ZIP/ZIP64standard provides insufficient level of encryption and also there is no real standard that everyone can folow, so SUM encrypts individual files as well as file entries in the zip archive on its own (using strong encryption) so that no one can view not just contents of files but also directory listing.

It is possible that somehow package got corrupted - copied from one media to another etc? What you can do is to open it with WInzip and find a two entries that should be unecrypted - directive file listing (txt) and XML file. If you can send both to epmanko at gmail dot com I can have a look.
