  • 1.  Unable to reinstall SMP 7.1 MP1

    Posted Apr 07, 2011 04:38 PM

OS Server 2008 R2 x64 no SP installed

Previously had SMP and DS installed but was having a number of issues so I used SIM to remove all the components and reinstall.  Given this install was not in production yet I also removed the IIS site, app pools, services that were not installed, and the database.

Now I am unable to reinstall SMP ... somewhat.  The install fails and then fails to roll back so it is actually functioning corectly but does not show up as installed in SIM and I am unable to procede with installing DS.

Looking at the logs Ajax fails to install which is probably not a big deal since it probably is still installed.

After that I start getting various failure to locate product items and then failure to unconfigure for the following:

    servicesframework.config

    directoryconnector.config

    altirisnsautomation.config

I will post the log entry for the last one:

No advice?  Yesterday I spend half the day removing every possible trace I could find of Altiris hoping that I could get it reinstalled after that but unfortunately it still fails with the same errors.

but I ended up doing a fresh install of the OS. We would've liked to been able to trouble shoot more but we didn't have the time. I think our original issue was that our anti virus was active while the install was going on so it crapped out at around 70%. After trying to re-install from there it wouldn't get past 12% and we kept getting an "Infrastructure Configuration Error". Sorry I can't be of anymore help.

Right now we're finally at a functional state and have DS 6.9 Sp5 and CMS 7.1 running on the same box. (SQL offbox) It's been an adventure so far but we're getting our agents pushed out and upgraded.

Unfortunately I can't reinstall the OS as this is a multipurpose box (it also runs SCCM)

So it looks you removed most of everything that was there. Did you uninstall the SIM completely from add/remove programs then delete the Altiris folder under Program Files? Also delete any registry entries associated with Altiris? It looks like you've already removed the Symantec_CMDB database as well. You could possibly remove the IIS role and allow SIM to install it when it runs the readiness check to make sure it adds classic mode and everything else. Turn off anti-virus or anything else scanning those folders real time. That's about all I can think of to get the system as clean as possible. Sorry it may not be much help.

Yes, I removed all of Altiris, SIM, deleted folders and spent hours cleaning up the registry.  Before I deleted the SIM directory I manually ran the msi files and any ones that gave me an option to uninstall I did.  Also deleted the site info in IIS that wasn't removed and deleted the DB.  Tried installing with mcafee AV turn off with no luck.  Haven't tried uninstalling IIS but I will try that soon.

Does anyone know what install files I can run manually and with what switches to install SMP SP1 so I can try that route and see if I have any better luck?

I was never able to resolve this issue even with symantec help.  I decided to move to a new server since I could not rebuild our SCCM server and I am having no issues now.

I did stumble upon this a few days ago and meant to send you a link. I'm curious to see if this would resolve it. It's basically a cleanup utility for SMP.

Yes the tech I spoke with had me try this and unfortunately it did not work either.  Thanks though!
