Well the temp file is what the placeholder service streams the data back into temporarily during the recall process. What may have happened is that the process timed out or fell over as it was replacing the original file. Anyway, it appears you have a large chunk of data in the placeholder which I'm guessing is now not doing anything? The placeholder service may well have a lock on that temp file also.
Can you do anything with the temp file? i.e can you copy it and rename it to your original file? - since essentially it should be the original file if the download completed
Can you stop and start the placeholder service and see if the lock is released on the temp file?
Does a dtrace of evplaceholderservice show anything?
Regards,
Jeff

Yes correct, I was afraid to do so in the first place.
