Unable to start SEPM service

Created: 11 May 2013 | 16 comments

Hi all,

Below is my SEP environment.

SEPM v11.0.7101.1056 with SQL server 2005 standard edition SP4

Running on a VM via Windows Server 2003 Std Edition SP2 32-bit

SQL server is installed on Windows Server 2003 Std Edition SP2 32-bit on another VM

I repeatedly see the below message when I attempted to start up my failed SEPM service.

The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of -1, the service is being stopped.

I saw the below error entry in the scm-server-0.log

SEVERE: Unknown Exception in: com.sygate.scm.server.servlet.StartupServlet

I had also followed the below SEP article but am clueless where the fault lies.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH102415&locale=en_US

Does anyone encounter this error I had?

Appreciate any help provided.

Thank you.

Regards,

Li Xi

are the sql services started?

can you try repair of sepm and check if sql services are running fine.

LiXiNg's picture

Hi Pete,

The SQL services are resided on another server running on SQL Server 2005 SP4. The SQL services are running.

I did a repair of SEPM via Add/Remove programs and error still remain.

I had also performed the following troubleshooting steps.

1. I can connect to SQL server via SQL management studio from SEPM server, no ODBC error

2. I am able to connect via the secars link, http://localhost:8014/secars/secars?hello,secars

3. No error logs seen by IIS

Rgds,

Li Xi

Yes, the SQL services are started on the remote SQL server

Did repair of SEPM via Add/Remove Programs but failed to correct error.

Did a test data source from SEPM to SQL server and successful.

hi,

It's sql server are available another server ?

Yes please check connectivity between sepm and sql.

You can support ticket also for received quick response.

Disaster Recovery instructions for Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 are documented elsewhere. See Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1: Best Practices for Disaster Recovery with the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager.

Below are the links, check

SEPM services take up a lot of CPU and become unresponsive

If your issue has been solved, please use the "Mark as Solution" for the valid thread.

Hi K33,

Thanks for sharing this link. This is exactly what I did to restore my SEPM. The puzzling part is that I am able to login to SQL using my sa account but unable to do so via the SEPM Management server configuration wizard.

I am sending the CollectLogs and db bak file for the engineering team to investigate further.

I took a long time to realise that I ought to have done the DR procedures to get my service up and running first.

Cheers,

Li Xi

Hi Honey_Jack,

Thanks for sharing. I did not encounter that error that you shared. Somehow, my SEPM is unable to connect via port 1433 to my SQL server despite I can do so from the ODBC settings and Management Studio in my SEPM.

I am waiting for the Symantec engineering team to analyze and update me the findings.

Cheers,

Li Xi

pete_4u2002's picture

is the SQL server listening on 1433?

or is configured on someother port?

SameerU's picture

Hi

Please repair and run management server wizard

Regards

pete_4u2002's picture

you need to have SEPm connecting to SQL, if it is unable to connect check the communication issues.

LiXiNg's picture

Hi Pete,

The SQL is connecting to 1433. Yes, we are stll unable to determine why SEPM cannot connect to SQL even though Data Source test in ODBC works and I can remotely connect to SQL server.

I had exported out my database to Engineering team to investigate on this error. As a workaround, we had restore the database to get the SEPM service.

Cheers,

Li Xi

pete_4u2002's picture

do you have sql client on SEPM communicating to SQL server?

LiXiNg's picture

Hi Sameer,

Repair does not solve this error. I am awaiting for the investigation results from engineering team.

Cheers,

Li Xi
