Unable to uninstall Symantac Endpoint Protection

I am trying to assist my Dad with a problem that recently occurred. He has a 32 BIT operating system running VISTA with service pack 2. His anti-virus program is Symantec Endpoint Protection that was installed 4/20/2008 with no issues until a couple of weeks ago. He received messages that the Live Update was not functioning. I hooked into his computer remotely and tried to repair it with the Symantec installation disk and it hangs up with a message of “Gathering Required Information” and never finishes. We get this same message if I try to remove it, install it again, or use Clean Wipe to remove it. I think it might have something to do with the Windows Installer but could us some advice before I go any further.

Any help would be appreciated,

Plassma, Is it better to use

Plassma,

Is it better to use the Dial-a-fix or just install a new version of Windows Installer 4.5?  I am not familiar with Dial-a-fix.  Do you just download it and run the items you want to repair?

hi

I read your other forum :) you are in the right place

http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&message.id=93253

to check if your windows installer is working fine.
run liveupdate from CD1
check if that works.
I think you need to re-register your msiexec.exe
try this document from microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346
go to services.msc and make sure windows installer is started.

Rafeeq, I do appreciate your

Rafeeq,

I do appreciate your assistance.

I just now had a chance to work on this with my Dad.  The first thing I did was to change the Windows Installer from Manual to Automatic and verified that it was running.  I tried to un-install the SEP from the control panel with the same result.  It goes 3/4 of the way of Gathering Required Information and just sits there.  I then ran the System File Checker from the Command Prompt and did not find any integrity violations.

Do you think it is best to use dial a fix as Plassma recommends or just downlod and install Windows Installer 4.5?

Bijay, Thanks for your

Bijay,

Thanks for your response.  I had tried that earlier prior to the posting.  I get the same result with cleanwipe, un- installing, or repair using the installation program.  The system looks like it is gathering required information with the green slide bar going 3/4 of the way rather quickly and then stops.  It continuse to blink but does not go any further.  We monitored it at one time for 45 minutes.  When we try to cancel it it hangs up again and the only way to turn it off is to use the task manager to end task.
