Unable to view VMware Vstorage API backups in Backup, Archive, and Restore GUI

Hi,

I'm running NetBackup 7.0.1 on Windows 2008, 64-bit and backing up VMware Vsphere 4.1 hosts using NetBackup and the VMware Vstorage API.

My VMware Vstorage API backups are successful, but I cannot see any of my VMware backups in BAR when I try to restore a Virtual Machine Backup.

1.  I entered the hostname of the backup host for the client name and select "Flash-Backup Windows " for the policy type.

2.  Then I select "Restore from virtual machine and click on select for restore.

I then receive a message saying that the server does not contain any backup for the client with the policy type.

I can see that there are backup images in the catalog, but cannot view any of the VMware backup images in "Backup, Archive, and Restore."

I tried restarting services, double-checked host names, and completed more successful backups, but still cannot view the VMware backup images within BAR.  I can view the Windows file level backup images in BAR.

Please Help.

Thanks,

Reagan

You try backup FULL?

The *. vmdk backups only appears in full schedule.

Your method is correct in restoring the file, but you will only succeed with backup FULL.

See the images attached.

Good Luck!

Post the result.

backups are full

Hi Marcio,

Thanks for the reply.  My backups are full.  I also performed test full backup that were successful.  Only change that is different than is that I'm using block level incremental backups in my policy.

I applied the NBU 7.0.1 VMware hotfix,

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

but it didn't help.

NetBackup is writing to the VMware backups to the catalog, but cannot pull up the images to select to restore from Backup, Archive, and Restore.

Post the log

Hi Reagan,

Do you can post the log of the restore job ?

I had many problems with backing up VM.

Today my environment is more stable.

Waiting ...

When restoring, must specify the client name

Hi Marcio,

Found out that for Virtual machine restores using the Vstorage API, the client name must be specified instaled instead of the backup host name, or the esx host name, or the vcenter host name.

The VMware client hostname depends on what is defined in the client name selection of the NBU VMware policy.

It could be the VM hostname, the VM UUID, or the VM Display name.

I could have sworn it worked before with the esx host name, but I'm able to start my restore now.

Crossing my fingers.

Thanks,

Reagan

Very Good

My backups from VM have the name differentiated.

Example:

For MS-Windows backups: brasil

For FlashBackup-Windows: brasil.com.br

For restores, depending than for restoring, the client name is differentiated.

As good pratice is keep the client every in same policy.

In this case, the name is always the same. What will differentiate what type of file will be restored: Restore from normal backup (to files) or Restore from Virtual Machone Backups (files *.vmdk).

Even more...
