Unable to wipe an SSD harddisk after SEE 8.2 installation

  • 1.  Unable to wipe an SSD harddisk after SEE 8.2 installation

    Posted Jul 15, 2015 12:17 AM

I have installed Symantec endpoint full disk encryption 8.2 on a 250 G harddisk SAMSUNG SSD 850 EVO. However, all drives have been encrypted immediately after first reboot(usually takes several hours). After 2nd reboot, there is an error"Fatal error has occured.  Machine will need to be restarted.  Brief description: The application returned a status of [0x80000001] in the state State_Initialized” from SEE and it cannot start Windows 7 anymore.

I installed SEE on another same model harddisk and the same issue occurs.

Both harddisks cannot be re-partitioned and the drives in them cannot be formatted by Windows or partition tools . I even tried to clean the MBR, but no luck.

I tried using diskpart by the procedures mentioned on Article: HOWTO55966http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO55966, but it is not working with error "The request could not be performed because of an I/O error".

I do not want to recover any files from the disk,i only want to re-use the disk since they are just newly bought.

    Please kindly help.

    Best regards,
    Perrin

The 850 EVO is a self-encrypting Opal-compliant drive, and not supported with SEE version 8.x.  You will need to contact Samsung and get a PSID Revert tool to reset the drive.  Symantec does not have a tool that can reset the drive.

In some cases I have seen lately, Samsung is simply replacing the drive instead of offering the PSID Revert tool.  I am not sure if this is due to a problem with their tool, or if they simply don't have an appropriate tool for the 850 EVO.  I know the tool exists for the 840, and have used it, but I have not been able to get my hands on one for the 850 as of yet to test.
