  • 1.  Undo patching a file in Ghost Explorer?

I was wondering if it is possible to "undo" the modification of a ghost image in Ghost Explorer.  For instance, if I "delete" a file from an image in Ghost Explorer, I assume the file is still actually in the image, but that now there is an instruction to not include that file when restoring.  Any time I make a file modification, and then look at the image properties, the size stays the same, and it shows the count of "patched files".

Is it ever possible to revert the image back to the way it was before any files were "patched"?

The only reason I assume there's a remote chance, is because you have the option to re-compile the image into a new image, whereby it actually creates a new smaller image without the files you've deleted.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Aaron Y

That's pretty much exactly what happens in the image, and in theory it indeed ought to be possible to trim that list to undo the changes (for NTFS, at least).

Since the changes to allow full NTFS editing in Explorer are brand new in GSS2, there hasn't been much time to gather more feedback on what people would like it to do. Creating UI to review the changelist and let it be adjusted to undo edits makes a lot of sense, but that's work that product management would have to approve and budget for based on demand. As with any enhancement the more people who want it, the more likely it is to get done.

I think if something like this were to ever be implemented, the best option would be an equivalent of a "snapshot"... maybe something like you'd see in VMware, or a windows "system restore point".  A snapshot could either be manually created, or be created when one closes Ghost Explorer.  If that were the case then, ghost explorer could create an initial snapshot the first time an image is opened in ghost explorer, then any changes that are made during that session can be reverted at least back to the initial snapshot.

Another desirable item might be to have the ability to "map" a ghost image to a Windows drive letter, allowing even easier modification of images, and editing the registry of an offline ghost image. (ie, changing the DevicePath registry entry of a sysprepped image, when you get new drivers).
