    Hi All,

Does unmanaged detector detect the client which is self managed  in SEP 12.1

    1. This works on a per subnet basis - you need a detector in each subnet your company has to guarantee coverage
    2. This won't detect clients that have SEP installed but are not managed by your SEPM (either "unmanaged" SEP clients or other companies SEP clients because we look to see if SEP is *installed*

Yes, it would detect unmanaged SEP clients.

An unmanaged detector checks ARP traffic on the network and if a machine's hostname is not listed as a managed client in the SEPM's database than it is considered an unmanaged client.

    Hi Brian,

Then what does this link says about

    http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/scheduled-report-question-about-pcs-network-without-sep

Why Simpson has told that "This won't detect clients that have SEP installed but are not managed by your SEPM (either "unmanaged" SEP clients or other companies SEP clients because we look to see if SEP is *installed* There are things we can potentially do in the future, depending on how the feature evolves and what customers request."

Why other employee of technical support did not say anything about it

First of all, simpson used that response from Paul Murgatroyd who originally posted it in 2008. So basically this was 5+ years ago. See here:

Second of all, my response is based on past experience, regardless of what has been said. You can test this out or put in a call to symantec support to help assist you.

Any machine which is not managed by SEPM will be detected by the detector.

    HI,

     Unmanaged Detector

The Unmanaged Detector detects all devices on your network. Exceptions specify the ranges or addresses for the devices that you do not want to detect. For example, you might not want to include the devices that never run the client software, such as printers

    Unmanaged Detector Exceptions

Use this dialog box to specify devices to exclude from detection as unmanaged devices. You can use either an IP address range or a MAC address to identify the devices to exclude.

You can also remove settings from the list.

    Regards

    Ajin
