An unnoticed or transparent connection with PCAnywhere

Created: 15 Oct 2010 | 1 comment

I am fairly new to PCA. We are trying to set it up to replace the Altiris Carbon Copy (DS remote control). Where I am struggling, probably because I am new to PCA, is how to make the remote connection unnoticed or transparent to the remote machine.

The change in the icon is not as much of an issue as the balloon that pops up when a connection is made and the changing of the desktop background is a big problem my environment.

Carbon Copy and the PCA Thin Client behave this way so I am sure that it is something that I am missing. I have looked and read everything that I can find, but I am getting no where. Does anyone have any idea or guide me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

You will need to make changes to the host and the remote.   In the Full pcAnywhere product some of these settings can be set in the GUI but in pcAnywhere solution they are only controlled in the Registry.  Note that there is a change that has to be made in the host and the remote machine to make it work as a silent observation tool.

To add the needed Service Stealth Mode registry key on a host machine.

  1. Exit all open programs.
  2. Open the Start menu click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type regedit and then click OK.
  4. In the Registry Editor, locate and select the following registry key:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\pcANYWHERE\CurrentVersion\Host
  5. Click Edit > New > DWORD Value.
  6. Rename the DWORD Value to ServiceStealthMode and then press Enter.
  7. Press Enter to open the Edit DWORD Value dialog box.
  8. Change the Value data to 1, and then click OK.
  9. Close the Registry Editor, and then restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

To modify the the needed registry keys on the remote machine.

  1. Exit all open programs.
  2. Open the Start menu click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type regedit and then click OK.
  4. In the Registry Editor, locate and select the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\pcAnywhere\CurrentVersion\Remote Control
  5. Right click and modify the following keys from 1 to 0
    DisableHostActiveDesktop
    OptimizeDesktop
