  • 1.  Update Parent Server (SEPM) without Reinstalling New Installation Package

    Posted Apr 27, 2009 03:27 PM
    Dear Expert,
Can I update SEP to new parent server (SEPM) without reinstalling installationa package? My SEPM is MR4. I have uninstall old SEPM (e.g site name: serversep1) and reinstall new SEPM (e.g. serverseptest) in the same server because something happen with my SEPM and now my SEP client can't update to new SEPM. As far as I know I must uninstall old SEPM and execute new installation package from latest SEPM but I think this way is not efficient, maybe you have other solution and experience regarding on this matter. Thank you in advance for your help.

There are several procedures to reinstall the SEPM without loosing the connectivity with the clients... because you did not one of them now you have to "manually" replace the sylink.xml file in all your clients to replace the communication settings. You can do it with a tool called Sylink Replacer.

    Dear Giuseppe,
Could you specify where exactly I can backup synlink.xml. I have search sylink.xml and result as shown in picture above. How I can get Synlink Replacer, do you have link or referece? Many thanks

    Hi Giuseppe,
Just forget my question, I have resolution from this link. Now I have 1 batch file to update my client. This is smart solution.
This is sample batch file script
    c:
    cd \"Program Files"\Symantec\"Symantec Endpoint Protection"\
    Smc -stop
    copy p:\14.IT\Sylink.xml C:\"Program Files"\"Symantec"\"Symantec Endpoint Protection"
    Smc -import sylink.xml
    Smc -start

    Thank you.

    hi,
you can obtain the tool by logging a case with Tech Support.

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2008062412271448

The tool will automatically place the sylink.xml in the required location.

    FYI
the location will be C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection ..... later you need to restart the smc service
