Updated failing in "copying .xdb" method....

  • 1.  Updated failing in "copying .xdb" method....

    Posted Jan 20, 2009 02:56 AM

    Environment:

    1. I have one Server and 15 clients. Server is Windows 2003 Server. Clients are Windows 2000 Prof SP4.

Server runs a Managed Installation of Symantec Anti virus Corporate Edition 9.0.0.338.

The network does not have access to Internet, so the Virus Definition Updates have to be done manually on the Server, using, "Copying .xdb files" option. I have gone through the procedure-related pages.

    2. My Symantec Anti virus Program folder is "C:\Program Files\SAV", as shown by the "VPHome" share in command prompt net share command.

    Problem:

The problem is : After I copy the .xdb file, to the above directory,

    1. Updates don't happen, the same old virus definitions date is displayed. Even if I restart the rtvscan.exe service, it does not update. If I leave it like that, for the service to try on its own, it does not update. Even if the computer is restarted it does not update.

    2.  Not only does the update fail, but the .xdb file itself disappears from the above folder. However, the files (.xdb and extracted) pertaining to an earlier update remain. That is, as of 20th December 2008. The new update files being tried are downloaded as on 19th January 2009.

    3. All clients show the same date as the server. I think there is no problem from the clients drawing the updates. Only the server is not able to update itself.

    History:

    1. The Server Program was installed from a CD dump of licensed Corporate Edition product, owned byus.

    2. Earlier, I was using Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition 8.x. When I moved to 9.x, it was a clean install, NOT an upgrade. Uninstalled SAV client from all the clients. Uninstalled SAV Server from the server. Installed 9.0 on the Server, then installed 9.x client on all the clients, as managed clients.

I have already looked at the following page containing "Instructions for updating virus definitions for Corporate Edition 9.x by Copying .xdb file"

Any pointers to solve the problem will be appreciated.
