Updating catalog takes too long

Created: 02 May 2013 | 9 comments

Hi Guys,

Really need advice and solution,

We use backup exec 2010R3 SP2 with hotfix 180429, 176937, 191248 and 194471. Today our regular backup has stuck on backing up our MS exchange 2003, BE keeps updating catalog and it has been more than 13 hrs. This issue never been occuring for the last 8 months, does anybody can suggest how to speed up this process ? Cos i dont want to cancel this job.

Thanks,

BR

Endik

Hi,

No way to speed up the job while running...it either completes or you have to end it and see if it does it again.

Thanks!

EDIT: You can also check out the TN below:

If running backup to tape, try running to disk & see if there is an improvement or not.

And try this KB as well - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

EDIT* Try setting the following key & a reboot will be required for the changes to take effect.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type PoolUsageMaximum as the entry name, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click PoolUsageMaximum, and then click Modify.
6. Click Decimal.
7. In the Value data box, type 60, and then click OK.

Yes. KB TECH70960 should have contained this info, however it just references the MS KB without a hyperlink. So making things a bit easier for the OP.

Hi All,

Thanks for the prompt reply, actually our BE is running on Win Server 2008 x64, and is it still necessary to modify the registry to handle Memory mgmt ? We have 8GB memory installed.

Thanks.

No need to since the OS is x64

Are backups running to disk or tape ?  And is this issue occuring during full or incr/diff backups ?

...easiest way to do this is to stop the backup, and rerun the job. If it happens again then you definitely have an issue.

Thanks!
