Updating Endpoint Protection 11.x

I have a customer who upgraded from Client Security 10.2 to Endpoint Protection 11.0 just before their AntiVirus licence expired.  Upgraded in Novemeber, expired in January.  I have the new PDF certificate and have registered it on the licencing site.  I also have the SLF file but this is where I am stuck.

How do I tell Endpoint Protection about this new licence?

There is no need for SLF file in the new verion like you had in the Business Pack of 10.x, you only need the SLF if you are running Mail Security for Exchange or other similiar programs.

Hope this helps,

But 1 year on from installtion Live Update ceases to update itself.  At this point how do I tell it that we have renewed our licence.  Reading other boards they suggest I have to reinstall the program.  Since Endpoint is already installed it refuses to start setup telling me that Endpoint is already installed.  The only option I can see is to uninstall and reinstall, but that would mean I would have to resetup the whole program again?

In 10.x business packs you can see the license and when it will expire because it uses a license file. 11.x products do not use a license file. If you have Mail Security for Exchange then this does use a license file.

The 10.x versions do in fact stop downloading definitions when the 60 day grace period has expired. I know this from experience. 11.x products will continue to download definitions beyond the license period. I know this because my install on SBS 2003 is running both server and clients with 11.x and full updated definitions. The Mail Security product is sitting with 2/5/2008 definitions and will not update since the license is expired. I have been waiting for 2 weeks for Dell to get Symantec to take my money but that is another story...

It is up to you to know when your product expires and when to renew it is on your certificate, but Symantec does send an email to the primary contact and the technical contact when your maintenance is about to expire. Of course they sent mine 4 days after it expired, doh!

You need to uninstall and re-install if you are using any version prior to 11.x on a peer to peer network in my opinion, if you are running a server based deploymenty then you can use the migration path specified in the documentation.

What version are you running now?
Are you running in a peer to peer environment or server domain environment?

OK thanks for the reply.

I too know from previous experiance with 10.1 and 10.2 that it ceased working and the only known but odd way of getting the updates to work again was to reinstall (What a stupid idea that is).

I am glad to know that 11.x doesn't require this, I thought maybe they would at least tie 11.x to your Licence portal username and password somehow so it can check to see if you have added a new licence.  I am surprised though that Symantec have absolutly no information about this question on their site.  I even rang their support line and the guy there suggested that we need to register the serial number on their licence portal and then download a file which updates Live Update.

Since using SEP I have decided to look elsewhere as I just feel the Symantec products aren't what they used to be.  I still have to support old customers still using their products.

I have never had the issue you are describing about the live update not working. I have had customers who renewed but did not know they needed to install a license file and as expected the definitions stopped downloading. Once the new license file was installed they started updating again. No re-install required unless you wanted to install a new build. Of course I have seen stranger things happen :smileywink:

I think they dropped the license file because there may have been too many issues with deploying and managing it or to many support calls generated, this is purely a guess on my part.

I agree that with 11.0 I was seriously looking at other products and still may, but MR1 works in both my Small Business Server 2003 deployments with no issues. Of course I spent 3 days looking at all the issues people were having and did my own testing to make sure I understood them.

Good luck!

I know this thread is old but I've been screwing around with my update since Feb I can't figure out how to apply my renewal and make SEP work again. LiveUpdate doesn't work and my signature file is dated in Feb.

I upgraded to SEP last year and the about file says version 11.0.776.942

I've checked all over Symantec Web and can't find what I need to do to make it work. I'm tired of paying out the cash and then investing hour-after-hour trying to get thing working again.

I'm feeling really dumb. Can anyone tell me what I have to do after I have received my renewal to get SEP working again?
