  • 1.  updating local clients from local GUP client

    Posted Jan 21, 2013 05:43 AM

We have only one SEP 11.0 server for all the clients,  but client updations are not working from Group Update Providers. SEP server is installed at our head office and plant is connected to head office by RF link.

These polices were working fine if we update clients through main SEP server, but clients are not Updating through Group Update Provider. Telnet is wokring on Server & GUP

I also unable to telnet 2967 Group Update Provider port from any client.

Please Suggest me a way to solve this problem.

    Hello,

Port 2967 needs to be opened.

Is the GUP offline (not communicating with SEPM)?

    Check this Article:

Troubleshooting the Group Update Provider (GUP) in Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP)

Is there a proxy on your Network??

Setting up the environment to permit full communication between the SEP client and the GUP remedied issue.

Also, check what version of SEP are you carrying. Hope you are carrying the Latest version of SEP 12.1 RU2.

    Try editing the LiveUpdate policy.

Under Group Update Provider settings, set the option “Maximum number of simultaneous downloads to clients” to the higher value.

Also, Test SEP to GUP and GUP to SEPM communication

    Check this Article:

Test SEP to GUP and GUP to SEPM communication

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH153328

Secondly, Are you running Proxy on the Network? Is it ISA proxy?

If yes, check these Articles below:

Client is not appearing in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM), error: HTTP returns status code=407

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH104926

Clients keep downloading virus definitions from SEPM via proxy when SEPM and SEP are in the same local network.

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH97507

    and this Thread below:

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/gup-issues-low-bandwidth

    Hope that helps!!

Does the GUP machines has status "Group Update Provider: Yes" in the properties when checked in the SEPM console?

Make sure the GUP has same Liveupdate policy assigned as the clients that it is supposed to update with definitions.

Check on the GUP machine in the SEP Installation folder if you find the "SharedUpdates" folder - does it have any content in it?

Policy corruption cannot be exluded - please try to create a new Liveupdate policy and assign it both to GUP and its clients.

    No SebastianZ

it shows : NO in the properties as i have posted snap

    Posted Jan 21, 2013 06:39 AM

Ok, I would go with the LU policy re-creation - if the status is "No", SEP won't be serving as a GUP and won't be listening on 2967 - reason why you could not telnet to it. Is the GUP machine the same SEP version as other clients and SEPM?

    hi,

Try to create NEW GUP policy and Apply again.

SEP client and GUP client are same group ?

If no please move GUP client on same group

    Dear SebastianZ

we hae same SEP at both side (11.0) i have recreate new Policy after creating GUP shows True as GUP but after some time it has changed to False again

In the liveupdate policy did you specifed GUP with its computer name? Can you try it as well with the following:

    - IP address of the machine

    - FQDN name

And one other thing you can try as well - I suppose your GUP is set in the policy as signle Group Update Provider, right? - please go ahead and change it to multiple group update providers and add it to the list there - is it working in this configuration?

Are there any other GUPs in your environment for same subnet?

the log does not show the source, hence it is better you collect the log for longer time.

    also open a support ticket.

The traffic from client to GUP will be visible in the sylink - just search for the 2967 port - here the client will requests definitions from GUP - but as mentioned if the GUP is for some reason false in the console this won't happen.

You can check one more thing - create similar sylink log on the GUP maschine this time and run it for 30-60 minutes - then search the in the log for the phrase: "GupStatus IsGup=" -> if it is 0 then the client itself reports it is not a Gup - this will give us a final confirmation.
