Your clients do not need to be updated the newer SEPM will happily manage the older clients. That said, I would personally recommend upgrading them when you can. MR2 is fairly old and the MR5 clients have performance improvements.

SEPM 11.5 can manage older clients, without any issues.
Thats how we upgrade , we first upgrade the manager to 11.5 that does not stop clients from connecting to new manager ,coz even they need to be upgraded.
you need not have to go much with upgrade just use the autoupgrade feature, clients will be upgraded to new version automatically
MU5 has loads of fixes, systems would work better in MU5 so please upgrade..
