I have this older version that I would like to fix, upgrade, or otherwise bring it up to speed. It was installed by an outside consultant, in his name, not our company’s; he is long gone. I am trying to learn how to use SEP & SEPM, but it seems to be "stuck" in a couple of areas. I have no problem buying a new version, unistalling the old and installing the latest version if this one can’t be fixed.

    I have done lsetup.exe /u and lucatalog.exe -update

After these steps, when I go into Add/Remove programs, SEP seems to repair ok, but when doing SEPM, I get the message: "The file D:\SEPM\Symentec Endpoint Protection Manager.msi is not a valid installation package for the product"

I have attached some screenshots of the details.

Thank you for you patience and help,

    Fred

You manager version is 11.0.5XXX however u r clients are in 11.0.4XXXX

for the definition problem,u need to check if your SEPM has the defs

    open sepm

    admin

    server

click on local site, at the bottom select show liveupdate downloads

what does do u see? january or latest

    its its old

    then open taskmanager

    kill all luall.exe; lucoms..lucallbackproxy.

    click on start

    run

    type luall.exe

    check if that downlods successfully

Considering the issue that are facing, I would recommend you to upgrade the SEPM to the latest version. However since you are using MR5 you cannot upgrade directly to RU6 MP1. If the number of clients are less, then you can create new packages after installing SEPM. If you want to use the existing database, then take a backup of the database(follow the Disaster Recovery document) and then uninstall the old SEPM. Install the latest SEPM Version and restore the database.

How to back up, restore, and/or move the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) and embedded Database to another disk or system

    Thanks Sandip,

What is contained in the "database"? When this version was installed there were less than 10 users. When it's running properly, I will install many more. Would it be necessary to backup the database or just do a total uninstall and cleanly install the newest version?

    Thanks,

    Fred

For 10 clients; better to uninstall / reinstall ; this will save lot of time

If you have just 10 Clients you can do a fresh install for SEPM ..and replace the sylink on the clients or deploy new Client package

Since you only have 10 Clients, you can start from the scratch. install a new SEPM and you can  restore the client commuincation by running the sylink replacer.

With all of these issues I inherited, and without a good set of (re)installation software, I have ordered new software and licenses for version 11.

Since I just have <10 clients currently using the package, how is the best way to uninstall all vestiges of the bad SEP/SEPM installation and deploy the new on the server and all (>10) clients?

    Thank you very much,

    Fred

    Thank you,

When you push the new version on top of the existing one; it will first uninstall the old one and wil install the new one.

    Go to Add/Remove Programs / Add/Remove Features.

And remove Symantec Endpoint Protection from the clients and Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager from the Server.

Is one way better than the other? My current installation is pretty messed-up. I don't however, see any deviations from the default settings. Does that mean I don't have to concerned about the "database"?

    Thanks again,

    Fred

    How many clients do you have? if not much;

you can start from the scratch; if u have any policies created; export it ; ( right click on policy and select export) we can import those later

    You can start fresh install

I need to upgrade and have just downloaded the latest version. I have only 1 client but as I operate as a remote admin and the client is mostly powered down, can I not worry about the client and let the new system upgrade it automatically?

If you have the newer package assigned to the group that client is in it will automatically update when the client connects to SEPM.  However, you cannot go from 11.42002.75 to 11.6100 MP1.  It needs to upgrade from 11.42002.75 or 11.0.5002 to 11.600 first.  So, create a test group in SEPM, and assign the 11.600 package to it.  Then place that client in that group.  Once it upgrades, you can then assign it to a group that has 11.6100 (MP1 as its referred to)

I have purchased and downloaded Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_11.0.6A_Xplat_EN_DVD . I am still unsure as to whether to try and uninstall my old versions of SEP and SEPM on the server and the less than ten attached PC's that have SEP installed or install the new version over the old one. I have seen nothing but default settings after obtaining access and probing around in SEPM console.

    Thanks all,

    Fred

Since you are using all default settings forget about old database..Un-install everything and install everything fresh..Since its just 10 clients it should not take more than an hour or 2
