Anyone know if this will be possible?

If we running the beta 7.1 now, once official version is released, will we be able to see this as an upgrade or will this need a rebuild?

this has always been a 'do over'. It only makes sense, you don't want to layer the latest code on top of stuff that may or may not even be present in the final version. Right?

To echo Jim, although I can't find the post, I did see a Symantec post explaining that there will not be supported migration from beta 7.1 to production 7.1.  It's part of the reason I've been sitting on my hands to set up Altiris for a new client.

To echo Mclemson, I am waiting sitting and waiting for Production 7.1.

i also saw that post that said there specifically wouldn't be a migration from beta to production code.

We're kinda stalling as well, hoping that symantec actually does release 7.1 in march as promised and doesn't delay it.  in the mean time, we're working on 7.0 in a test environment to get used to the overall changes since it's so much different from our current 6.x setup.  And there IS a sort of migration path from 7.0 to 7.1 in that you can tell your 7.1 install to talk to the 7.0 database and upgrade teh DB itself.  You just need to make sure that your 7.0 and 7.1 installs have feature parity - that is, have exactly the same solutions installed in both environments before you tell 7.1 to touch the 7.0 db.

It should be March 7.  I just returned from a Twin Cities User Group meeting a few hours ago, and the product manager presenting on 7.1 said there's no reason to delay.  They do sound a lot more comfortable about the timeline than they sounded for the 7.0 release.

Many of the folks at the meeting stated that they were waiting for 7.1 to begin.  The performance I saw out of the console was blazing, even for reporting.  When they presented 7.0 on similar hardware, they would fill the load times with a little idle chatter while pages loaded.

Thanks guys! The 'idle chatter' made me laugh! I think we've all mastered the art of doing this when demo-ing version 7 to a client :-p

Agreed, we twiddling our thumbs until 7.1, March just seems to far away and well into the year already, and New Years was just the other day. Scary!

If DS 7.1 doesn't gain the ability to do a complete deployment from imaging to immediate application loading once the OS sets itself up; I will not be able to recommend DS 7.1 and instead I will still recommend DS 6.9 SPx.

They also need to streamline importing a new computer for imaging

And they need to convert all console screens to silverlight.

I used the NS 7.1 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 and I too was very impressed with the performance....now let's address fixing functions and smoothing out the UI.

Computer management, Jobs/Tasks, Policies, Software all uses the Silverlight console with the "Outlook 2007" view you might be familiar with.

Predefined computers has been improved, I understand, to add similar functionality to 6.9 -- but I haven't investigated it personally.

    Hey guys,

We are in the midst of a merger and are currently migrating to CMS 7. Can you think of any features of the product that are going to change significantly that would affect how I do my current 6.5 > 7.0 migration?

and the server hierarchy. This won't change in 7.1 (although I'm sure it will be enhanced).

You can now, starting with 7.0, have the hierarchy of multiple NS servers, but the restrictions on task servers are much more strict. Each task\package server - now called site servers, are going to require IIS, and in my opinion, you'll need more of them.

Thankfully, those site servers are NOT required to be 64bit servers.  As long as they have server03 or newer, they're fine.

Can a site server be 64 bit? (ex. 2008 R2?) . I don't recall seeing that being supported, but I could be wrong and would appreciate anyone that can point me to some documentation that says otherwise?  I can't get mine to show up when selecting PXE server configuration to choose, even though it has all site services (task, package).

my beta server has been wiped for the moment, but i do remmeber seeing both 32bit and 64bit installers in the agents and settings section where you install the site server components from.

How can you get this?  I assume it is based on RC code.

    Hi,

If your read the documentaiton and any agrrement regarding BETA versions of Symantec products, You will see that it is NEVER supported to upgrade from a beta version to a release version.

Just remeber that the purpose of a beta version is to be tested by partners, customers and so on and to allow them to give feedback to the developers so that developers can release a great best version and you send your beta instalation to the trash!

    Kin regards,
