Just wanted to ask the experts around here about what upgrade path I should take.  I have a rather old but stable IBM server running Mail Security for exchange 6.0.9 right now.  Should I just upgrade to the 6.0.10 which my current version reports as the newest version?  Or, should I go ahead and upgrade to the newly released 6.5.  I see that 6.5 is the answer for Exchange 2010 but I also see in the release notes that it works for Exchange 2003 which I am running.  I just was not sure since the 6.5 may be a considerable resource hog compared to the 6.0.xx versions because it’s built for the newest version of Exchange.  Thanks for any advice guys!!

Either Should Do

Hi Kevin,

As you're on Exchange 2003, either will do. If it's Exchange 2000, you're stuck with the 6.0.x product.  If it's Exchange 2010, only SMSMSE 6.5 will work.

I recommend examining the material about what's new in SMSMMSE 6.5 (Exchange Server 2010 Support / VMware and Hyper-V Virtualization Support / Enhanced installation error dialogue with web links / Quarantine Notification enhancements / 24% reduction in install package size / Customizable logging enables disk I/O reductions / Premium Antispam Enhancements with Memory and CPU throttling to reduce the impact to server / Fastpass expedites processing for good senders, improving throughput by up to 15% / Local Reputation collection adapts protection to local conditions). Full details can be found in the Release notes for Symantec Mail Security 6.5 for Microsoft Exchange

If there is a feature there that you will require, use 6.5.  If not, stay with 6.0.10.

Please let the forum know what you decide to do, and add any information that may be helpful to a future mail admin who is trying to make the same 6.0.10/6.5 decision!

Thanks and best regards,

Mick

With thanks and best regards,

Mick

In the article it mentions MAPI 1.21
My problem is that i have outlook on the same computer, so then MAPI doesnt want to install.

Is there an easy work around here?
can i uninstall OUTLOOK, install MAPI, then reinstall OUTLOOK?

i also saw it requires current version of MDAC (which i have).
checked this after reffering to this MS Page - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301202

requirements for SMS 6.5?

hi,

after reading the System Requirements i noticed this paragraph under "Server system requirements "

The operating system requirements for Microsoft Exchange 2007 are as follows:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP1 or later (64-bit) Standard or Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 (64-bit) Standard or Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) Standard or Enterprise Edition

As the OP & i are running Server 2003 can we not upgrade to 6.5?
or am i missing something here?

Works Fine on Windows 2003 / Exchange 2007

I have a 64-bit Windows 2003 server running Ex2007.  SMSMSE 6.5 is installed and working fine.  There is absolutely no requirment to migrate to Windows Server 2008.

Thanks and best regards,

Mick

Re: MAPI

Hi Brett,

I really would not recommend having MS Outlook installed on a server OS.  Servers should not be used as a workstation for word processing, mail reading, etc- and definitely never to surf the Internet, as so many threats can infect a machine by drive-by these days.

My quick test here verifies that SMSMSE won't install onto a server that has the MS Outlook mail client installed.  I don't know of any way around that, unfortunately, and it's probably getting into unsupported territory by trying to shoehorn it on there.

The best advice: uninstall MS Outlook and let the server act as a dedicated mail server.  If that same physical machine must absolutely also be used to access mail, then use the OWA (Oulook Web Access, the webmail that Exchange can serve up) or the lighter Outlook Express.

Thanks and best regards,

Mick

Currently the Server is also a terminal server.
However have recently purchased another server to be a primary TS.
guess i will get rid of outlook from the server that i want Mail Security on.

upgrading from 5.0 to 6.0- beware force rescan

hello, don't know regarding 6.5, but the upgrade process from SMSMSE v5 to v6.0 is giving a little problem:
- be care of the advanced "auto-protect" options.
Normaly both are disabled by default, (as documentation told), but curiously, upgrading from 5.0 activate both, all the same was previously not in v.5:

  • scan message bodies
  • force rescan

If you are 20 mailboxes, no problems, if you are 2'000, can get a problem !!!
That's fun because, if install from scratch, both are deactivated !

Mark this if solve or help !
