Upgrade to newest DS or not?

jeremyboger's picture

We are currently running DS 6.9.179. I know that there is a newer version (I believe DS 6.9 SP2) available.

My question is, what fixes have been implemented into the newest version over our current version? Is it going to be worth the time and effort on our part to upgrade to this version over the one we currently have?

We have almost 8,000 clients, so it takes quite some time for all of them to get their AClient upgraded to the newest version. We can usually get it to happen over a weekend, but it takes a while.

read the release Notes

When you download the newest versions there are alway's release notes delivered.
In the release notes you can see what has been changed.
If there is nothing in it that you really need or want, then simply save the time and troubles and do no upgrade.

Some of the tweeks

The major thing that got me to upgrade to 6.9 SP1 was the integration of Ghost. It now comes with ghost 11 and is fully integrated. This also means you don't need to have seperate licenses of ghost to use with the DS. Some other pluses is the ability to deploy an image to any computer. This means that any image can now work on any hardware. I am still a little sceptical of this and haven't tried it yet, but it sounds good in theory. One, we have not used is the Dagent is now supported on XP pcs. Previously there was a workaround to get the DAgent installed on XP but it was not supported. Now it is and is pushed by default.

Some of the bugs I have found (litterally, I found them and they added them to the release notes), problems with the ASDK integratoin (the authentication does not work). I hear they are very close to fixing this though. There is also a problem with WinPE, but there is a workaround for that. The fix should becoming out soon as well.

erikw's suggestion is good. It is always best to read the release notes prior to installing the latest version of the DS. That will also give you more information on what is in the realease.
