  • 1.  Upgrade PGP server to Symantec Encryption Management server 3.3

    Posted Aug 09, 2013 01:58 PM

We are running PGP Universal 3.12 (Build 50) and would like to upgrade the server to Symantec Ecryption Management server 3.3

We have download the upgrade guide from the foillowing link and still have 3 questions

    http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CEMQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.symantec.com%2Fbusiness%2Fsupport%2Fresources%2Fsites%2FBUSINESS%2Fcontent%2Flive%2FDOCUMENTATION%2F6000%2FDOC6203%2Fen_US%2FsymcEncrMgmtServer_330_Upgrade_guide_en.pdf&ei=5ykFUtK8K8n9iwLzzoAg&usg=AFQjCNEOm_Bf0QwqMOS373q7X34swLbBEA&sig2=h9Z89EREyrFCFY1gRqgehQ&bvm=bv.50500085,d.cGE

    1)  We would like to confirm 3.12 can be upgraded to 3.3 directly (provided that hardware meet the requirement)

    2)  After the server upgrade, will the client will be push automatically or it has to be download from the upgraded server and install manually for users

We do not want to push automatically to end users and would like to deployment client one by one.

    3)  When I login to download 3.3 upgrade, I found the followings avaliable to be download

    SymantecEncryption3.3.0MP3_EncryptionDesktop10.3.0_PUP.zip

    SymantecEncryption3.3.0MP3_PUP.zip

    SymantecEncryptionWeb3.3.0MP3Full.zip

    SymantecEncryption3.3.0_PUP.zip

    SymantecEncryptionWeb3.3.0Full.zip

Which one I should use?   According to upgrade guide,

SymantecEncryption3.3.0_PUP.zip should be used, am I right?

What is the difference between those files?

    Thanks,

    Jimmy

Erm, it looks like some of this is already discussed in that upgrade guide you linked (also found at: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6203).

    1. Pg9 says "To upgrade from version 3.x, you can do a PUP update to update to version 3.3.0."
    2. The below article tells you how to disable automatic client upgrades (done via policy):
      http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH177025
    3. Pg 10 describes how to upgrade using the PUP files.  It's up to you if going to v3.3.0 is enough, or if you want to go to 3.3.0MP3 as well.  If you choose the latter, then you want btoh the files below:
      "SymantecEncryption3.3.0_PUP.zip"
      "SymantecEncryption3.3.0MP3_PUP.zip"

To help decide if you want to go to v3.3.0MP3, I'd recommend reading up on the release notes below:
    http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6199

    Thanks for the information!

One more question, the upgrade guide recommend to upgrade the primary uninversal server first.

However, we are thinking to test the upgrade with the ciuster server.  Can we upgrade the cluster first?

We only have 1 primary and 1 cluster server.

    Thanks,

    Jimmy

The Upgrade Guide recommends that you (pg 13):

"Install and test the upgrade in a lab orstaging environment before you integrate the upgrade into your network"

Regarding the cluster environment, it states that the primary UN must be migrated first.

Do you have a virtual environment?  Perhaps you could spin up a couple of test boxes to try the upgrade out that way and avoid touching your production environment until you're happy with the process...
