Upgraded to BE 12.5 - Next challenge backing up 2008

Hello

I have recently upgraded to BE 12.5. Since then I have had the following two  challenges.

1. Volume shadow copies (In the "System Volume Information" folder) seem to grow indefinitely on the media server until eventually the drive runs out of space. This is the still the case after limiting or disabling VSS on the volume. Will a patch fix this( I checked and BE reports that SP 2 for BEWS 12.5, 12.5.2213 is available for installation) Is this a known problem for which SP2 includes the fix.

2.  12.5 Is running on Server 2003. We have recently started implementing Server 2008\2008r2. Now that I have to back these servers up (While the media server remains on 2003)I understand that I need to patch BE12.5 to support 2008. When is this patch being released, where can I find it and are there any differences to installing the patch or deploying 2008 agents to the target 2008 boxes.

Hi Ruska, 1. You can read up

Hi Ruska,

1. You can read up about what SP2 addresses here...: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/323735.htm

2. BEWS 12.5 SP2 also applies to Windows Server 2008. From that same link:

Windows Server 2008

DataCenter (x64-64bit), DataCenter (x86-32bit), Enterprise (x64-64bit), Enterprise (x86-32bit), Server Core, Standard (x64-64bit), Standard (x86-32bit), Web Server (x64-64bit), Web Server (x86-32bit)

Don't forget though, that when upgrading your SP, you will need to push out your remote agents again. The reason for this is that they will also push out needed patches/upgrades to your various agents.

You can read further from the Symantec website...

http://www.symantec.com/business/backup-exec-for-w...

hope this helps!

hi ruska

windows 2008R2 can be backed up using the latest HF 31998 you can apply this patch by simply running live update on the media server

Help | about | symantec backup exec | installed updates | run live update or tools | run live updates
once done that push the remote agent to the 2008R2 server

FYI
Backup exec 12.5 media server setup is not supported on the 2008R2 servers, ie u can only backup that server using the remote agent with the latest HF,

Many thanks

Many thanks guys and sorry for responding so late.

The information was very usefull in planning next steps going forward.

Being so close to "change freeze" with the amount of servers that will need to be touched I will have to push implementation out to early next year.

The  information above put things into perspective without which doing the upgrades going forward coudl only have ended in disaster.

Thanks Again!
