Upgrading BE2010 R2 to R3

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi all,

I would like to upgrade my BE2010 R2 to R3 SP3 in order to backup the exchange 2010 SP3.

And I have downloaded the R3 iso image. During the installation, I need to enter a license ID.

But the question is which ID should I enter? I cannot use the one used in installing BE2010 R2 i.e. the license ID of existing BE.

Hi,

You can use your existing licenses which is the beauty of the upgrade. R2 licenses work with R3, with no prerequisites involved.

Thanks!

EDIT: BEFORE doing the upgrade, stop the BE services and grab manual copies of the Data/Catalogs folders. Then perform the upgrade, install BE 2010 R3 SP3 and any subsequent patches, and then push-install the updates to your remote servers.

Thanks!

Thanks for your quick reply.

But when I entered the key, it said "License key has already been registered".

Do I need to remove the key first?

No you don't...it should just work. If you have your license keys for the media server, any applications etc, it should just work and not look at whether or not they are registered.

Try the upgrade without putting the licenses in...

Thanks!

Oh I just found I can continue without entering the license key as they have already been added. Thanks. Btw, do you know do I need to reinstall the remote agents on the exchange servers after upgrading the BE to R3? The exchange 2010 servers are now still without any service packs.

And if the exhange servers are installed SP3 in the future, do I need to reinstall the remote agent?

Hi Dev,

Yes...it is advisable. R2 is 1 version behind, and although backups are going to run, you're going to get an exception, and having remote agents a version behind is only supported for rolling upgrades.

Upgrade the media server to the latest SP and patches, and then push-install the remote agents. They may require a reboot...

Thanks!

Hello Dev,

And if the exhange servers are installed SP3 in the future, do I need to reinstall the remote agent?

No. you do not reinstall the agent after installing Exchange service packs. Reinstallation of agents will only be required when you update the Backup Exec Media server with Backup Exec Service Packs.

Thanks for all replys.

After successfully upgraded to R3 SP3, another problem appears.

When creating a new backup job, there is nothing for me to select the resouces. Just like the picture below.

What should I do? Please advise.

...are your services all started up? Did you push-install your RAWS agent updates out?

Thanks!

Hello Dev,

Refer to these two technotes. They should surely help.

Hi CraigV, the services are all up.

Hi Sush, I read and followed the articels but nothing changed.

It's very strange that only that account encounters this problem but not the other accounts. I can see and select the resources using other accounts.

Are you sure that this particular account has the relevant rights?

Sure. And that account is the domain admin account. It is almost the most powerful account.

It doesnt matter since I can still create backup jobs using other admin accounts. Thanks all !!!
