Upgrading from CMS7.1 SP1 to SP2

Created: 09 Oct 2012 | 14 comments

I decided to upgrade our version of Altiris to SP2 as there was an upgrade showing in SIM.

It seems to have failed when updating the CMS component the error is: Configuration failed while attempting: Configuring Altiris Notifiaction Server_SP2_MP1....

The Installed Products screen shows Altiris Client Management Suite 7.1 SP2 MP1 - Product is not properly configured - This product is installeed but not properly configured. you may need to manually configure or install this product again to resolve the problem. This may be caused byt he SQL server not being available.

I have re tried the install from the Installe new products screen within SIM but it returns the same error after attempting the reinstall. The Readiness check advises that an older version fo the ASDK has been found, despite me slelecting to uninstall the previous version.

Any help guys greatly appreciated as we can't use Altiris while it's in this state

Thanks

I'll be honest having never done this before I'm not sure what to look for in there but there seems to be a reoccurance of this error in there, does this mean anything to you?

Okay, so just retry the installation while having a look into the log viewer. There must be an error.

Stupid question: database is ready? harddrive has enough free storage?

You should upgrade to ITMS 7.1 SP2 by following "Upgrading to ITMS 7.1 SP2 - Best Practices":

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH177513

Watch the logviewer as it runs.

Then if you want to upgrade to ITMS 7.1 SP2 MR1, follow "Upgrading to ITMS 7.1 SP2 – MP1 – Best Practices":

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH197966

But note: "If you are not currently running ITMS 7.1 SP2, you must upgrade to this version prior to installing MP1. For information on upgrading to SP2"

I was asked to run the update as our reseller was unable to help without incurring consultancy fees, we were on 7.1 SP1 before and I went into the SIM and chose to install updates assuming it would do things in the correct order as it had picked them up. It seems to have done that apart from the CMS component.

It's now showing the CMS 7.1SP2 MP1 saying the Product is not properly configured, I can reconfigure or uninstall.

Is it possible to donwgrade the products to just SP2 from the upgrade installed products screen and then try to upgrade again to MP1?

any advice guys apart from don't do this again?

Reconfigure whilst watching the Altiris log and see what errors you get. If you switch SIM from showing Suites to Solutions you may be able to configure specific solutions.

Is there any other problem with Altiris at the moment? There can be issues with SIM around it showing reconfigure when it shouldn't:

'Symantec Installation Manager shows "Product is not properly configured" or "Partial installation" for a product':

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH122207

"What criteria are checked to determine "Product is not properly configured" in SIM?"

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO21631

I wouldn't try and downgrade.

And, provided you have a support contract, you could contact support before doing any upgrades. But you should always read the release notes first, they should tell you about any actions you need to take first.

Thanks for the info all, I'll look into this, just checking through the SIM it seems that all the products are reporting as not properly configured.

I think a support call may be necessary to pull this one back, is this likely to jeopardise the whole Altiris installation and setup?

I suppose it's possible.

I upgraded a system I look after from SP1 to SP2 a while ago before the revised guiidance came out and it's been fine since.

I'd try a reconfig or repair on one solution and look in the log while it's going on to see if there are any errors.

If a repair is required you could run it from the command line using msiexec.exe. Put /l*v "%temp%\repair.log" and you might need SKIPAIM=1. The you will have a detailed msi log you can find any repair errors in.

Does the NS actually work at the moment?

Sometimes an upgrade will require going through the setup wizard again. Have you tried opening the console to see if this happens? Might be all that's needed...

I think that only works with 6.0, with 7 you can do a reconfigure database.

Will I loose data if I reconfigure the database?

You shouldn't. But back it up first anyway.

I have been in contact with Symantec Support with regard to this,

The situation at the moment is that there are multiple partial installs showing in the SIM now.

I've been advised to attempt to reconfigure the components of which there are 22!

Seems like the whole upgrade process has screwed things up.

Has anyone else had this go wrong?
