Upgrading SEP 11 to SEP 12.1
Created: 09 Oct 2012 | Updated: 09 Oct 2012 | 12 comments
We are about to upgrade our existing SEP 11 RU6 MP2 environment to SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 and I just want to confirm my understanding of the documentation I've read.
1. Do we upgrade the management server to SEP 12.1 RTM then to 12.1 RU1 and finally to 12.1 RU1 MP1?
2. Do we have to upgrade the clients in stages as well, or can we leave them at 11 RU6 MP2 until the SEPM is complete and then upgrade them to 12.1 RU1 MP1?
Thanks
Kate

Supported upgrade paths to Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 12.1 from Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11.x
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH192779
Upgrade path should be SEP 11.x --> SEP 12.1 RU1 --> SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1
Thanks In Advance

So does this say that I can upgrade SEP 11 RU6 to any version of SEP 12.1 that is higher than the RTM in one shot? I read somewhere else that upgrading from SEP 12.1 RTM to SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 wasn't supported.
Sorry I only read the first part of your post, missed the upgrade path part. :)
What about the clients... do they need to follow the same upgrade path?
Thanks
It is always recommended that you migrate the SEPM and Clients from the SEP 12.1 RTM to SEP 12.1 RU1 and then to SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1
SEP 12.1.671 >> SEP 12.1 RU1 >> SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1
Yes, the clients would be able to report back to the SEPM without any issues upon migration.

2) Upgrading or migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.1101 (RU1 MP1)

NOTE: About Migration paths
Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.1101.401 (RU1 MP1) can migrate seamlessly over the following:

Hi Kate,
I would suggest to wait for few more days, don't upgrade to SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1.
SEP 12.1 RU2 may releases at the end of oct'12.
If you wish to upgrade right now then upgrade path will be SEP 11 RU6 MP2 --> SEP 12.1 RU1 --> SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1
After RU2 release probably you can directly upgrade from SEP RU6 MP2 to SEP 12.1 RU2
You can save your time as well you will be using latest SEP version.
If can test SEP 12.1 RU2 beta : https://symbeta.symantec.com/login.html

Hello,
I would agree with Chetan.
Migrating from Symantec Endpoint Protection v.11.0.RU6 MP2 clients to Install Symantec Endpoint Protection v.12.1.RU1 could migrate flawlessly without any issues.
Yes, you migration would in the manner below:
SEPM 11.0.RU6 MP2 --->> SEPM 12.1 RU1 ----->> SEP clients 12.1 RU1
SEPM 12.1 RU1 ------- >>SEPM 12.1 RU1 MP1----->> SEP clients 12.1 RU1 MP1
It is always recommended to perform a Disaster Recovery for SEPM 11.x before Migrating to SEP 12.1 as a Backup step.
Here are few steps to look at for Migration:
1) How to upgrade the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) to Version 12.1 RU1

2) a) Upgrading or migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.1000 (RU1)

b) Upgrading or migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.1101 (RU1 MP1)

Hi I would like to ask why my SEPM version 11.0.7101.1056 is not supported for migration to 12.1 RU1 when I have successfully performed the upgrade using my virtual environment.
I assumed that when Symantec say the upgrade is not supported the upgrade process would be aborted.
However, within my test environment the upgrade process worked perfectly but due to Symantec not supporting this path I'm unable to implement the process in my live environment.
I took a P2V image of my live environment as to ensure no differentiation between the two.
Is there anything further I need to do or do I simply wait for 12.1 RU2?
Thanks
Hi Steve,
The 11.0 RU7, RU7 MP1, and RU7 MP2 SEPM contains SQL schema changes that are newer than the schema used by 12.1. For this reason, migrations from certain 11.0 RU7 to 12.1 versions are not supported.
I would strongly suggest to wait till SEP 12.1 RU2 release, it might release at the end of Oct'12.

Hello Trendytoast,
You should migrate to SEP 12.1.1000.157 RU1. On File Connect, take care of which file you're downloading, it's little bit vicious cause there are always 2 different version available.
- One RU version (Release Update or RTM)
- One MP version (Maintenant Patch).
The package you need, it's strictly mentioned Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1_RU1_Part_1 (It's the one at the 8th position and his size1.87Gb if I remember well). It contains everything you need for migration.
As some customers were complaining about some information they didn't find pretty obvious or clear enough regarding the migration path supported, there was a new article that mixing all the information from KB already provided to you in one with precise details (target build version, etc ...).
Official migration path supported to migrate on SEP 12.1 => http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...
And as Chetan said and I'm 200% agree with him, you'd better stay with 12.1.1000.157 RU1 until Jaguar (12.1 RU2) will be released soon.
Plenty of new features and especially very useful one to fix very quickly most of the common communication issue between clients and SEPM ;-)
Kind Regards,
A. Wesker
Hi Chetan,
I have just found an email sent to me by Symantec tecnical support out lining the path I need to take.
They said if I plan to upgrade from 11.0.7101.1056 to 12.1.1.MP1 then;
First upgrade my SEPM from 11.0.7101.1056 to 12.1.RU1
After which I can upgrade from 12.1.RU1 to 12.1.RU1.MP1
I hope you can see my confusion as some articles say the upgrade to supported others say it isn't.
Many Thanks
Hi Steve,
Now no need to follow multiple upgrade paths because Symantec has released latest version i.e. SEP 12.1 RU2
You can directly upgrade from 11.0.7101.1056 to SEP 12.1 RU2 (If it's in English version)
Check this article
Supported upgrade paths to Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 12.1 from Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11.x
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH192779
Supported upgrade paths for the Symantec Endpoint Protection client
http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO81070
In case you see SEP 12.1 RU2 available for download then it might be in English Edition only.
For local languages you might have to wait for few more days. (Probably till 30th Nov'12)
For suites you might have to wait till December'12.
I hope it helps.
