USB DAT72 Slow Backups/Not detecting new tapes

I'm running an HP DAT72 External USB tape drive with Backup Exec 10d with all current updates. The server has a RAID 5 SCSI array and is a simple Domain/File server with plenty of power to spare. Drives have been defragged.

Backing up an average of 22 gig per night takes approximately 4+ hours with verification. Does this sound normal or should the backups take less time? I can't imagine trying to back up several hundred gigs worth of data at this rate.

I've also run into a new problem where Backup Exec will not recognize when tapes are changed. I finished a backup last night and the tape automatically ejected. When I checked Backup Exec it showed no media was inserted. I then inserted the next days tape and Backup Exec would not recognize it until I ran services.msc and restarted the backup exec engine. This is a new problem that just started within the past week.

Russ

Try inventoring the drive after the tape is inserted. That should help recognize the tape.

4 hours with verification means maybe 2 hours with no verification, that is 11 GB/hour. That is more or less what you can expect with a DAT72, if your source file system has plenty of very small files.
