We are using Ghost 11.5 and have been successful in creating bootable USB drives to use when ghosting machines.  We have created several USB drives and used them once or twice.  What happens is that after using the image we are unable to continue using the drives because it states 'Error Loading Operating System' when we boot from the USB drive. If we look at the USB device in the Disk Managment it shows that there are 2 partitions on the USB drive.  One gets a drive letter and is only about 34MB in size containing DELL drivers and the second shows that it is a healthy drive with 31GB of space but it is inaccessible.  We have tried changing the drive letter, but there is an error when adding a letter to it stating that it is not enabled.  After a reboot of the machine the same error occurs. We cannot boot from the drive and use it to ghost machines.  I would go ahead and just re-install the Ghost application, but this has happened to almost all of the USB drives that we have deployed.  They are no longer usable as Ghost image devices.

Is there a way to resolve the issue without having to format the drive and recreate the Ghost bootable drive?

I am wondering whether your USB drives are booting as drive C and are then being affected by the imaging process which is trying to deploy an image to the USB stick rather than the local hard disk.

However, there are a number of bits of information missing which you should include next time you post.

First of all, are you running build 11.5.1.2266 ?  Secondly, what operating system are you trying to image. Third, are your USB devices booting DOS or WinPE?

I build my own WinPE bootable USB sticks and USB drives using the technique described in this article:

    Adventures with WinPE Symantec Connect

and have yet to lost the ability to boot. However, any automatic code I use for imaging, does check first that the USB device has not booted as Drive C. You can use WMI under WinPE for this purpose.
