Used license count wrong?
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 5 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.
Anyone else have this issue, I have roughly 1400 users on my NS 6.9 server. However according to Patch Mgmt I am using 2691 licenses and App Metering has me pegged at 2163. Now until now Altiris has been providing me with "temporary" 3 month licenses that are increased by the number I'm over. But I'm hoping to fix this as opposed to have to ask for a new temp file every 3 months. Anyone else out there experience this?

The license count for patch
is a bit different than some solutions. What you are seeing is that retired computers, that have not been deleted, are still holding onto a license.

Setting
There is a setting to either delete the system once it is taken out of production and it will return the license , or to to retire them leave them in the database and they hold the license. You would think they would fix this at some point. You might have to manually go in and free up the licenses.
Contact Licensing Support
If your AUP is current, they may be able to provide you with additional patch licenses to clear up the problem.
If you're not using Asset
If you're not using Asset Management and/or CMDB, I would suggest you delete retired computers, as there is no harm in doing so. If you mistakenly delete an active machine, it'll just recreate within the system the next time it sends inventory. If you have implemented Asset, I would NOT delete anything.
You can find Altiris' licensing model here (for NS6 only I think):

I have Asset Mgmt....
And so unfortunately I cannot delete any records which basically leaves me with a count at more than double of actual machines. Contacted Altiris and apparently they fixed this for Ver 7 and there is no plan to fix it on 6. Their fix to me was to upgrade server. Considering how unstable my test server is I think I'll hold off for a while. In the meantime they've sent me temporary licenses again. I can't believe it never occurred to them to fix it in ver 6 considering how many people it must be affecting.
