  • 1.  Per user license for Symantec Corporpate Anti-virus

Hi guys, hopefully an easy one.

I've been searching and calling for a few days now trying to get a definitive answer to this question but havent really had a solid response.

Basically we are in the procvess of rolling out Windows 7 however we have one application that is not compatible.  In the end we are running this application in a XP Mode VM perfectly so no issues there.

Obviously though, this is a full virtual machine and as such needs to be secured as well as the host.

What I'm trying to nail down is how the client licensing for Symantec Corporate v10 will cover this.

A few competitor products offer a 'per-user' license that covers the host PC and VM's installed as well, but judging by the information we have on our license it seems it is per OS that we need to install it.

I would like to avoid having to purchase two licenses per machine just to run one single legacy application if avoidable.

So I guess bottom line the question is:  Is there a per user license that covers virtual machines on a host for Symantec Antivirus Corporate v10?

    Thanks in advance!!

the license is per user/node. Wherever you install the SEP/SAV client. You may contact the Symantec Partner or Symantec sales to confirm the same.

Seeing as how SAV 10 is NOT Win7 compatible, roll out SEP.  SEP can be installed in the XP and Win7 machine, using only one license count.

I think you  would need one license...per machine...

As per my understanding SEP gets installed on the Base Operating System and Compaitibility Mode is a feature of Windows 7, so only one AV License would be sufficient.

    Which means only one License.

But if you are using VMware on Windows 7, a separate AV license will be used provided you install the AV software on the VM machine.

SEP is definetly an option in the future but at the moment we need a quick solution.  I'll def be contacting Symantec sales to check into it.

I'm finding it really hard to get a straight answer on this subject, for SAV 10 or SEP.  I've spoke to Symantec tech support and sales but neither seemed very definite on the subject.

Just to give a bit more info on the subject, the XP mode in Windows 7 actually runs a full virtual machine of XP using Microsoft Virtual PC.  This is streamlined into the OS so it can appear that it just runs in compatibility mode (like XP did for 98 and 2000) , but it is still a FULL machine that needs to be protected same as any other.

So what we would need to do is install SAV on the Windows 7 machine, open the XP mode virtual machine and install SAV.  This would ensure that the VM is porotected as well as the host OS.

The question is do I need a separate license for the client OS, being on the same physical machine.

Since this forums seems to be rather technically-oriented, I think the best option and the safest one would be to contact Customer Care and ask.

Also, I believe this product does not have an activation so how can we know that the virus definition is being updated? thanks

For SEP 11.0, it is licensed per physical or virtual machine with one exception being the first instance of the XP Mode VM in Windows 7. If you have the host of Win7 and then one instance of hte XP Mode VM, then only one license is needed.
