User mode question

I haven't been able to find a clear, solid answer about this. If our organization sets up all of our clients to operate in user-mode, and we add a new user to our domain and they log into an existing PC on the network, SEP will not recognize that user unless we've added them in SEP Manager, or have imported updated data, correct? If so, then how will the SEP client behave? I assume it will default to computer mode, but which group settings will be applied? Will it apply the temporary group's settings?
