Using AppAssure Replay with Enterprise Vault

We're using Dell AppAssure Replay to backup in our environment. With Enterprise Vault, their (Dell's) support is telling me that backup mode is not necessary. Has anyone used this and found this to be true?

I guess it all depends on why they say it isn't necessary
are they talking about doing snapshots or something like that?
Because typically in big environments with netapps that have the snapshot capability, its so fast and runs multiple times a day that theres no point in backup mode
