  • 1.  Using Brightmail 6.x Message Filter with MDaemon

    Posted Dec 17, 2008 10:54 PM

I am evaluating Brightmail on a Windows 2003 server by itself.  IIS with SMTP is installed, and Brightmail 6.x Message Filter Client and Control Center are installed on this box with TomCat during the install.  The Mdaemon email server is on another box.  I set the firewall to forward smtp inbound to Brightmail, it receives and processes the message according to the debug level I set in the logs.  The harvester previously connected with the real Mdaemon email server on the other box.

No email ever gets delivered to the email server according to the logs.  (nothing shows up in inbound queue on MDaemon, and the end user).  I accepted the default groups of * in the brightmail setup for all valid email users.

What is happening is all the inbound email is sitting on the Brightmail box in c:\inetpub\mailroot\drop

(as specified in the Default SMTP Server settings)

Where/how does Brightmail deliver to a downstream mail server? (I set the downstream mail server in the filtering section for what happens if viruses are cleaned, and the last choice was the downstream mail server)

I have uses SMS for Exchange, but not Brightmail with another smtp server. MIke

    Hi Mike,

It's important to remember here that SMBF doens't actually route messages at all, it just plugs into IIS scans the messages and IIS(the MTA) is actually responsible to route messages downstream.  Did you test if IIS was able to route the messages downstream to the Mdaemon mail server before you installed SBMF?  It sounds to me like you probably haven't configured IIS to route mail to your local domain.  I found this doc on the net that seems to cover the topic pretty well:

    Cheers,

Thank you Kevin, the default domain was created in virtual smtp as a local domain, hence the options for remote were not available and the drop directory was the only choice available. After creating the virtual smtp domain as a remote, all seems to be functioning correctly, with message delivery!  Thank you for point on the document! Mike
