Using FSAUtility to restore original files - does the Fileserver still need to be in EV?
I haven't worked with FSAutility but got a question from a customer.
They have used EV to archive a lot of old user homedirectories from several different fileservers (server1 - server4) when they migrated to new fileservers and this is fine.
Server1 and Server2 has been shut down and removed from EV and they are about to shut down server3 and server4.
After a while they had to do a restore of one homefolder from the archive using the FSAUtility with -t option. What they realized is that FSAutility looks for a UNC path for the source folderm volume or fileserver with -s option.
Does this mean that they have to have all fileserver still in EV as a Fileserver target, volume object and Archive Point to be able to do restores from the archives??
And for server1 and server2 allready removed from network and EV do they have to (can they) recreate them as targets???

Hi,
I am a little confused by the above. So the data was archived to EV under old servers. These were removed and now you want to restore to an alternate location, correct?
Have you tried
I cannot be 100% certain without testing this, but may work and not need you to re-add the old file server.
The customer was migrating
The customer was migrating four fileservers into one new cluster. Before the migratation they moved all homefolders of people that left the company (or so they believed) to a new folder called "leftusers" under D: on the fileservers.
The "leftusers" folder was then addad as a archivepoint in EV and archived.
After some months one user came back from maternity leave and found that her homefolder was gone.
The server that held her homefolder was shutdown and removed and also removed from EV.
Since the homefolders was pretty big using search or archive explorer to collect all files is no good idea so customer was looking into using FSAUtility.
I heard that FSAUtility is talking to the placeholder service on servers and if that's the thruth then I will need to have "old servers" left in EV and on the network to be able to use FSAUtility since the -s option points to UNC path of the original server.
Can I set up a new server (in VMware) and name it to the same name as the removed server, set up a D: and add "leftusers" folder and install placeholder and add the server as a target in EV and create a archivepoint to "leftusers".
I think that the customer has tried using: "Fsautility –t –s \\OldServer105\h$ -d \\NewServer\NewShare" before they asked me but I will check in on that.

Hi Mats, To the best of my
Hi Mats,
To the best of my knowledge on FSAUtility the -s [UNC location] is used only to reference the source data in the Vault, not as a restore path and as such the -t -s [source UNC location] -d [destination UNC location] should work
