  • 1.  Using PS Dos Ghost Client boot image with 3com PXE Server

    Hi,

I am hving problems with my current set up using server 2003 server running DHCP and ghost solutions 2.5.

Currently using the Windows PE and running ghost32 from there after following the set up guide to put the boot files in the TFTPBOOT directory.

I want to use the more simple PS-Dos where it boots straight into ghost.exe (as opposed to ghost32.exe) but cannot quite figure out how to configure the image and BOOTPTAB file to do this.

Any help would be massively appreciated

    Regards
    Mark

    Sure,

    1. Open the 3com Image editor and create a PXE menu. This file is the bootstrap that will load your Dos images.

    2. Add your images that you created w/ the ghost boot wizard or converted from floppies (or whatever)

    3. Make a wildcard entry composed of all ???????????? - this will provide the same menu to all clients. (feel free to change this later).

Leave the PXE & TFTP programs running as Apps so you can watch the file paths and make sure they are correct. You may or may not need to tweak your tftp's root folder and make sure it's consistant. You'll be able to see really quickly if there's a problem. After you get everything running then close them and setup up as services in Windows.

I strongly recommend ditching the 3com tftp server. I've had great success w/ tftpd32, and others on this forum really like the solar winds tftp.

    Good luck. Cheers,

    Thank you,

That's done the trick, have been having all sorts of problems with time-outs when running the Windows PE but the PS Dos version is working fine.

Any idea why that might be?

can you elaborate on "problems with time-outs?"

Also, I'd appreciate it if you mark this thread as a solution. ;)

    Have done, thank you.

The problem we had was that the image would start to be created over the network, reach 1-2% and then time out with the error message 'Connection timed out with GhostCode 19945'.

Using the PS Dos option has now created a full image and only uses around 40% of our bandwidth as opposed to 100% using the WindowsPE.

Hmmm. I don't believe I've ever gotten that error message before. I searched the forums and there are a few posts on that error number, but nothing w/ a clear solution. You may want to try that if you haven't already. I think WinPE is a bit over-rated myself; there really are a lot of advantages using DOS w/ imaging - especially w/ PXE booting. I'd be all for WinPE if they could strip it down to 30MB or so. :) ......never happen.
