  • 1.  using WSUS existing patch store, for Altiris PATCH reuse

Is it possible to use the alternate source path, to point an existing WSUS store, to avoid download twice the patches ?

In the context a large customer, keeping WSUS in there, for a transition step. I do not find any KB or connect about this !! No body tries already ?

However, I have tried to use a shared repository in the past, and it simply didn't work. Whatever server 'got there first' saw the packages as valid, the rest of the servers failed and wouldn't validate the downloads.

The packages have to be created by the standard pmimport process flow, per server, in order for the servers to 'see' the packages.

As Jharings says, the share expected by SMP is linked to PMimport Process. No way to change it.

WSUS also have his own format (just .cab files are shared not the whole .exe or .msp).

    So download it twice !

    A) If you plan to use WSUS to patch, then just use Altiris to report (don't download anything other than pmimport).

    B) If you plan to eventually use Altiris to patch, then start slowly, so you can validate the process. For a short amount of time, until Altiris is fully deployed and becomes your "only" patch process, you will have some duplicate downloads.

Honestly I was thinking not working, but wanted to verify before tell this. THanks a lot your confirmation all. I feel that "duplicate" the storage is not such a problem... (how is the size 20 GB for 5 languages?)

The 2 things where WSUS is better than altiris is:

    - schedule being able to patch on "shutdown" from the user.

    - automate deployment of the patches: more manual process in Altiris.
