Hi,
I am using BE 11d on windows server 2003 with exchange stnd 2003.
During a complete backup, i get following error:

V-79-57344-33928 - Access is denied.
Access denied to database.

Backup- \\SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group V-79-57344-33928 - Access is denied.
Access denied to database .

Job ended: 15 November 2006 at 06:30:46
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0008488 - Access is denied.
Final error category: Security Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33928

This backup is being taken at removable USB REV drive.

If I try to run disk backup only for exchange server- storage groups on local hard disk, it is 100% sucessfull. BUt complete backup always fails.

Same account is used for both processess.

I have tried for account settings to give full rights to account. Checked veritas docs.

Please help.

Thanks

Hello,

As per your post I understand that you can perform backup of the Exchange Resources without any error onto the local disk,do you mean that you have tried a backup within backup exec (on to backup to disk folder) or are you talking about the NTBackup(Windows Native Backup utility) on the Exchange Server (cold backup) ? (Note:For doing this you need to stop all the Exchange Services)

Also what all resources are getting backed up in this job ?

Have you tried recreating the job just to isolate that this is not a job corruption issue.

Also if this job is a part of policy you can create a normal job and see the results..this would isolate a policy corruption issue as well.

Please try the above things and post us the results.

Hi,
From backup refered to here i mean with VERITAS 11d.
More explanation is:
When i perform veritas backup for any data files to my other hard disk as disk backup, no errors come.
When i perform the veritas backup on REV DRIVE for data no error comes.
This error only comes when ibackup exchange storage groups on REV DRIVE the error comes. The exchange backup when i do on disk (HDD) again NO error comes.
The error only comes when backing up with veritas on REV drive for exchange backup.

The errors details i have already given.

Thanks

Hi! I am coming across the same error, surely there has to be a way to make the individual mailboxes option to work!!
Hope the symantec guys can help us with that.

I believe I am having the same issue.  When doing an Exchange Mailbox backup I recieve the following error.

I would like to open a support case for this but I am having the hardest time trying to navigate the website.  I have a support contract and I can't seem to figure out how to use it.  In my opinion this site sucks.

When trying to open and email support case I get redirected to here only to find out that that last time this thread was updated was in November of last year and still has not resolution.  Is anyone out there?

Being able to restore individual exchange items aka GRT (granular restore tech.) is only supported on backup to disk folders, not tape drives.  Which of course symantec is quite misleading with their advertising and neglect to mention this small insignificant detail.  do a search on this forum for "GRT"  and you will see that their supposedlly wonderful granular restore technology is practically an alpha or early beta version at best.  I had some limited success backing up exchange to disk and then running another job to backup that folder to tape, but then I ran into GRT not following overwrite protection settings.

GRT is absolutely supported both to tape and disk.  This is a known issue that you folks are experiencing and it should be resolved with rev 7170 which can be downloaded here........

I had the same error.  My guess for me was that vxmon.exe was running at 10 to 50% CPU.  I rebooted the server.  Set the agent utility not to launch.  Set my selection list to not use the favorites.  Set my selection list to only backup the information stores.

Had this exact same problem couldn't back the storage groups at all even though all the tests worked OK.  Firstly, logged into Outlook Web Access with the Backup account details to check it could get access OK.  Then went to Start>All Programs>administrative tools>Domain Security Policy.  this brings up the default domain security settings snap in.  Go to Local Policies>User Rights Assignment and then add the backup operators, administrators, etc to the following entries:- Allow logon locally; backup files and directories; log on as a batch job, log on as a service; restore files and directories; take ownership of files or other objects.

After that backing up the Exchange stores worked first time, and if you run a restore you can see all the individual users underneath each mailbox that are within the storage group.

Good luck!

Steve, you say this error is fixed with 7170, but Im running 7170 and am having the problem. Im trying to backup the Public Information Store to Tape, with GRT enabled. The idea is that I rarely have to restore individual items from Public Folders, but I'd like the abiltiy to do so. I don't mind the fact that the store has to be staged to disk first.

The article that comes up when clicking the link on the job log refers to disabled Mailbox accounts...is there anything I should be looking at with regards to mail enabled public folders?

Also, when this error occurs, the Information Store does not show up on the Restore tab for the backup job. You can select the entire job to restore and it appears that it will attempt this, but none of the granularity is there to even attempt to restore an individual message.

I'd appreciate some help on this. Thanks.

General comments to all in this thread.

Comment to “Network Admin”, Rehman Memon:

As per “Backup Exec 11d Best Practices Guide: Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server Backup Exec 11d Best Practices Guide: Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server” (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/285753.htm) – backing up Exchange Information Store using GRT (“Enable the restore of individual mail messages and folders from Information Store backups”)

2. When using the Granular Restore Technology (GRT) feature to perform Exchange data backups setting the Device to submit the data to a Backup-to-Disk folder is preferred. This will allow an image on disc, which can be used to create restore selections dynamically, and could greatly reduce the time required to restore individual Exchange data items. Make certain the B2d location is on a Local NTFS volume and is not on a NAS, ISCSI or USB attached device

Comment to Sysadmin:

It looks like you are backing up “Legacy Mailboxes” (individual mailboxes), which is no longer necessary, as you can backup jobs of the Information Store with (“Enable the restore of individual mail messages and folders from Information Store backups”.  To potentially correct this, simply deselect the icon “Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes” (and Microsoft Public Folders) from the job properties, and only select and backup the Microsoft Information Store icon.

For Backup Exec for Windows Servers v11d rev 6235 - if you would like to have the “Legacy Mailboxes” icon removed from the backup selection list, deselect “Tools | Options | Microsoft Exchange | Legacy Mailboxes”

To find further information regarding GRT Exchange backup, please see “Backup Exec 11d Best Practices Guide: Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server Backup Exec 11d Best Practices Guide: Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server” (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/285753.htm)

If you still need to submit a case via the Web, please go to https://mysupport.symantec.com/

Comment to Navar Holmes:

Please make sure you have created the Full and the Incremental jobs using a Policy.  Furthermore, the job has to be backed up to a “Backup-to-Disk” folder  to be supported (“Make sure the B2d target location is a LOCAL NTFS volume (issues may be encountered if drive is attached in a manner other than IDE, SATA, SCSI, SAS or Fiber). USB attached devices are considered "removable hard disks" and are not able to provide an acceptable throughput for Exchange GRT B2d operations. NAS devices, mapped drives or DFS shares (or other linked volumes) are not local and can not correctly support the permissions required to read the Exchange data correctly. Please see the Admin Guide for 11d page 1230 for additional details.”).

Comments to Jerry Battaglia:

If you are backing up Public Folders with GRT enabled to tape, you will not be able to restore individual Public Folder. GRT for Public Folders is only available if backed up to disk.  (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/287426.htm - “No restore selections for Backup Exec Granular Restore Technology (GRT) enabled Exchange Incremental backups”)

Please see the above technote for “Information Store does not show up on the Restore tab for the backup job”

Hopefully, the above answers many if not all questions - please let me know.

Regards,

Christiane

So SteveVRTS.

When is this really going to work and the "known issue" going to be fixed currently is a joke that i cant restore messages from tape. I'd say time is running out and a solution needs to be found quick smart.

Still having the error problem.  I am using a policy.  I have two (VIP and First) stores.  My daily full runs just fine for both stores.  I have the policy/template run a incr every 3 hours starting at 6am to 6:15pm.  But here is the kicker.  The  VIP incr runs but the First fails with the error.

When I was using the stripped down version of Backup Exec AKA NTBackup to backup my Exchange server.  I had no issues and I mean none.

To get good backups I had to go back to using NTBackup.  11D is just to buggy right now to use on Exchange.  It is more important to get good backups than being able to restore a single message.  Plus NTBackup is faster.
