This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi All,

I am running netbackup 6.5.5, VCB 1.5, vmconverter 4, ESX 4 and win 2k3 sp2. When i attempt to do a full VM restore to the ESX server, it fails with code 5. In the bpvmutil log, i see the error 'ESX credentials not found.'

How do I go about setting this credential? Is it in nbu or vpshere GUI? FYI, Netbackup is currently validated using a VC, under the credentials->virtual machine servers->VMware VirtualCenter Server.

Thanks all.

Regards,
ck

Hi

I've tested NBU 7.0 and had the same error.
In my case the user connection to Virtual Center server was a backup operator, and this user if not modified only have read permissions.
For test purposes I've given the backup user admin rights and everything worked fine.

Guys are you backing up

Guys are you backing up VMware using legacy VCB way or using new Vstorage API which are built in to NBU 7???

VCB Full VM restore fail with status code 5

i'm backing up using the legacy VCB method since I'm using 6.5.5. For my connection to the VC, it's the administrator account.

Had that restoration ever

Had that restoration ever worked for you??

If settings in the Backup, Archive Restore GUI are set incorrectly, a Status 5 can occur.

If backups have recently worked for the client in question, the issue may simply be a NetBackup configuration problem. Below are the most common configuration options that cause a Status 5 error if set incorrectly.

Check the detailed troubleshooting guide for status code 5.

This is a new installation so the restoration has never worked before.

Please share the restore

Please share the restore options that you have selected/specified.

These are the requirements for full VM restore as per the VMWare fo NBU Guide:

3 Specify the following:
Server to use for                   The NetBackup master server that directed the backup
Backup and restores
Source client for                   The VMware virtual machine that was backed up
restores
Destination client                 The VMware backup proxy server
for restores
Policy type for                       FlashBackup-Windows
restores

Supporting Storage Foundation and VCS on Unix and Windows as well as NetBackup on Unix and Windows.

VCB Full VM restore fail with status code 5

yup...that's exactly what I have selected. and from the restore marked files wizard, i select 'Restore all virtualmachine files to a virtualmachine server automatically using VMware Converter'.

I also put in my ESX server as the virtual machine server ( could there be an issue here since i validate netbackup with the VC and not the ESX per se?) and the proxy server as the staging machine for restoration.

Have found the solution...when I use the VC server to do the credential validation, i should also enter the VC server in the Virtual Machine server field when performing the restore rather than the ESX server.
