Veritas NetBackup 5.1 MP6: Media library issue

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Good morning everyone!

Does anyone know how to tell Veritas not to choose a certain tape when a backup has been scheduled? I.E. Tape A000001 is in a bank vault, off-site. We have this occurrence often; Veritas will ask for a tape that we have off-site, which leads us to restarting a backup and letting it ask for a different tape. Any thoughts or work-arounds for this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone for your support!

If NetBackup is choosing a

If NetBackup is choosing a tape that is physically offsite, then NetBackup has not been updated to this fact.

You need to use the media access port of your library to inventory your robot 'import and export' During this process netbackup's own inventory is updated, and therefore will only use tapes 'on-site'

To do this you would have to Inventory Robot and Update Inventory option

To tell NetBackup not to use a certain media/tape would be update its location using the Move option in the Admin Console and change its location to standalone and the Volume Group ---
If the tape is still in the robot you risk having problems however, but this option can be useful when you maybe have only 1 MAP but want to take several tapes out of libraries magazine at once, rather than through the MAP, which is long and laborious. But you do need to inventory your library every time media is moved in and out.

Tip: Get overview/document your NBU environment. Run 'nbsu' and review the output.

If you are using Standalone

If you are using Standalone (non robotic) tape drives, NeBackup has no idea where the media is and will request previously written media to append to if the criteria fits (pool & retention level). To prevent this, you can suspend the media (bpmedia -suspend -m <media-id> ).

RE: Standalone

Marianne,

Yes we are using a Standalone solution here; no robotic cabinets. If I suspend media that is off-site, how does one go about reinstating it? I am disenchanted with the idea of suspending a recent Full-Backup that is offsite and then having a server failure that we could not recover from because of an indefinitely suspended tape.

Is there another method of telling NetBackup that the tape is being held off-site for disaster recovery or retention purposes?

Thanks!

A suspended tape can be used

A suspended tape can be used for restores. You cannot add more backups to it while in suspended state. When all images on the tape expire, it will automatically be 'unsuspended' and returned to scratch.

See this explanation ib NBU Admin Guide I:

You cannot use a suspended volume for backups until retention periods for all backups on it have expired. At that time, NetBackup deletes the suspended volume from the NetBackup media catalog and unassigns it from NetBackup.
A suspended volume is available for restores.
