Virtual Machine Backup
Created: 17 Aug 2012 | 11 comments
Hello, I am running Backup Exec 2010 R3. I would like to backup the full virtual machines running on ESXi 5.0 once a month. I do not see anything in Backup Exec Manager for doing full virtual machine backup. Am I missing something?

Have you installed Agent for VMware? or Have you installed RAWS on the VM?
Amol
I am not sure but I think I did RAWS. Here is what I did
Backup Exec Manager --> Tools --> Install Agent and Media Servers on other servers --> Add (name of the virtual machines) and next ...next .. finish
In the selection list under Favourite Resources do you see the name of the VM.

All VMs servers are under Favourite Resources --> Windows Systems. I do not see any VM under Favourite Resources root.

This is correct because your VM's are treated as physical Windows machines. You can now proceed to backup these VM's as if they are physical machines.
If you want to backup the VM's as VM's, then you would need a AVVI licence. If you are not sure whether you have an AVVI licence, go to Help ---> About and then click on the Licencing Info button.
If you have a AVVI licence, then you can select your VM's to backup either by expanding your vCentre or ESX host.

Ans:
It is not clear yet from your above comments that you want to portect the virtual machine using vmware agent or remote agent
Also about your post , All VMs servers are under Favourite Resources --> Windows Systems. I do not see any VM under Favourite Resources root.
Ans Please ensure remote agent on that virtual machine is publishing the name of Media server for that please go to that virtual machine & then go to remote agent utility & then click on publishing & enter the Fully quailified name of Media server & then click on okay & restart the remote agent services on that server & backup server too. Once done please open backup selection & you should see that virtual machine listed under favorite resources & you can backup the server then
Also if you want to protect the virtual machine using vmware agent then you will see the name of your vcenter or ESX were you will see all virtual machines so you can protect that by doing a backup of virtual machine to backup entire vmdk with GRT on , so that in restore you will have option to restore individual files for that virtual machines
Hope that helps
Thanks

Hi,
I would like to do the monthly Virtual machines backup. I got the point that they are now treat as physical windows machines because I have remote agent installed on them. I check the license and AVVI is not listed there. We have 3 ESXi hosts and dozens of VMs running on them. Do I need 3 AVVI licenses?
Thanks
Yes, AVVI license is per ESX host...and it includes unlimited agent licenses for the windows/linux guests...and if there is an app like exch, sql running on these VMs, and if you require GRT, then appropriate licenses for these apps are required as well...
OK. We do have SQL, Exchange and SharePoint licenses. I would assume I do not need additional licenses for application to back up the VMware machines using AVVI. Please confirm as I will be doing RAWS and AVVI.
Thanks
AVVI license for each ESX host...Additional RAWS licenses would not be required for the VMs themselves as they are included with AVVI...And for app GRT, would require SQL, Exchange & Sharepoint agent licenses as well..
Thank you very much all.
