Ugh..just typing that title makes me nervous.

Hello everyone! I'm preparing for a migration that doesn't seem to be popularly documented in these forums. I have to migrated our current Virtual SMP 7.1 SP2 Notification Server to a brand new Physical server that will of course be installed with SMP 7.1 SP2.

I'm hoping that someone has experienced doing this and has the documentation they followed to share. Or if anyone can provide links for this type of migration that would be great.

I have good experience and understanding of SMP installation and agent redirection. But what I'm wanting to make sure of is the timing of when to redirect agents and just how exactly to point the new physical SMP to the existing production DB or should I create a temporary one?

Your assistance is very much appreciated!

Thanks.

Are you doing a V2P migration or are you building a new SMP with a new name and IP address?

To re use an existing database I believe the best approach is to build with a temp db then switch the new SMP to the existing db.

If you're building a new SMP with new name and IP you can migrate the agents from the old SMP to new SMP in your own good time.

According to your question, I believe I am technically doing both. Our current SMP 7.1 SP2 Notification Server is virtual. We have a brand new physical server that will be our new SMP 7.1 SP2 Notification Server. So yes I am doing a V2P migration and yes I'm building a new SMP on physical hardware.

This new physical server will have a new name and IP address. I plan on redirecting all agents using DNS and the redirection capabilities in a Targeted Agent Settings policy.

In order to install the SMP on the new physical server, I have to specify a DB settings. Should I stage a temporary DB in SQL until I am ready to point it to the production DB? Will I need to use the migration wizard to migrate settings from the old virtual SMP to the new physcial SMP?

I think the best approach is to use a temporary db until everything is installed exactly the same as the old NS, then swap to the existing db.

I'd look at the v7 to 7.1 migration guide to tell you what doesn't get migrated with the db.
