Virtual Vault and Require Offline Store settings (OVRequireOfflineStore)
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 5 comments
So, Require Offline Store is new for SP3? If I turn off Cached Exchange Mode and set Require Offline Store to 'no' what type of problems have people seen with Virtual Vault? I will be testing this setting but wanted to get some feedback from the group to see if there is anything I need to look out for. It appears that if you have users directly connected to the network this setting will work fine and not take up space on the hard drive. If users are working on a laptop or remotely you will want to turn on 'Require Offline Store' so the client does not have to go across the WAN to access EV as often.
Thoughts?
Thanks,

Hi 1x,
This is one of the settings in the Desktop Policy, Advanced tab, Vault Cache, Offline store required.
This option controls whether Vault Cache can be enabled when no offline store is present. Users have offline store (OST) files if Outlook Cached Exchange Mode is enabled. If a user does not have an OST file, Enterprise Vault cannot perform preemptive caching. If there is no preemptive caching, there is an increased load on Vault Cache content synchronization for newly archived items.
Straight outta the help file...
Thanks,

hmm.
Hello 1x and bz
No. An offline store is not required for Vault Cache to be enabled
If you set the value to 0, does this imply Virtual Vault can be enabled, despite the users not having an OST?
Thanks

Hi Gertjan, If you set
Hi Gertjan,
If you set "Offline store required" to No (0), then Virtual Vault should still work fine.
The reason for this is that the new v8.0 Outlook Add-In uses the new DeskTop Client Cache (DTCC) to store MetaData Cache (MDC). If you had the OST enabled, then you would have items available in the Content Cache (CC) which is where preemptive items are stored. The key to Virtual Vault is the MetaData Cache (MDC) which is basically a PST file (with a file extension of .MDC) stored on the local PC. The items in the MDC are not full items (hence the name), but it gets the metadata from Enterprise Vault VC synchronizations. Virtual Vault uses the MDC and synchronizations to keep itself up-to-date.
Anyway, that's how I understand it works. Someone, please correct me if i'm way off here...
thanks,
BZ
BZ I am aware of that, please read my post again
Hi BZ. I am fully aware of how it works. What I am looking for are people who have implemented this with 44,000 users or more. Since I am testing for a large company I want to make sure this is a solid solution. This registry setting was not published in "official" documents in the past and it was discouraged from Technical Support. So has something changed or been enhanced that would make this a viable option? Does it work well across fast WAN connections?

Facing the same.
Hello Greg, and others.
Interesting. I'm facing the same. Having 89500 users. Unable to determine who has a laptop (or not)
Seeing this key, do you perhaps think I can use OVEnabled to disable OfflineVault (VaultCache), and then use the OfflineStoreRequired also to No, would everyone than still get virtual vault?
Interesting. I'll see what I can test.
Gertjan
