Virtualization

I work at a lab where I use programs for my experiments but I am not aloud to install any programs that will get on the network. With software vitalization will i be able to install my lab programs on my computer but keep them from accessing the network?

When you virtualize the

When you virtualize the software you are creating an invisable layer that seperates the software from the operating system. The software is fully functional. If the software requires network access it will still have it in a layer. You might be able to create the layer to disable the network aspect of the software. That would not be specific to the virtualization technology, that would be specific to the software.

Virtualize software

the software i want to install is completly a stand alone program. it does not require any network access. The network admin dont not allow my program to be installed because it has not yet been certified as a completly safe program and they say that would take up to a year to do. I was wondering if I used software virtualization to put it on a virtual layer that would, in all respects, act like a stand alone computer not on a network so it would not jepordize the security of the network.

SWV 6.1

With SWV 6.1 (Symantec Workspace Virtualization) you could set the virtualized app to not interact with anything other program on the computer. In that way it would be pretty close to what you are describing (it would almost act like a stand alone computer).  Do you think the network admin would be comfortable with that?

Network Access

No because the network admin has to run a sweep of the programs on the network and if it finds any that are not on the list of pre approved programs they have to get deleted. But from what I am seeing is that the only way to get it where it would be completly like a stand alone computer is if I run a Virtual Operating System where It woudl be 2 operating systems on one computer and one of the operating systems has no network programs(drivers etc,) so it cant get on the network at all. the only problem is by doing this it requires to split up the hard drive which put a limit on how much memory each OS gets. I have looked into Software Virtualization Solution from Altiris and they say that you can run 2 different versions of a program. IE Adobe v7 and Adobe v 8 at the same time so I was wondering if there was a way to do that also with the OS If I was forced to go that route where with the one computer I could have my OS with the safe programs on the network. And at the same time have my OS with the lab program running and can use my lab program while being able to get online and interpret the results from the expirments form the net. I was also wondering if there is a Virtualization program that could do that instead of the OS one because like i stated earlier running 2 OS will take up a lot larger footprint than just running 2 virtual programs.

humm.  When a layer is

humm.  When a layer is deactivated it's no longer installed and so the scan shouldn't find the application.  Also with 6.1 we've added "Hide from OS" options so windows won't be able to see certain parts of the file but I don't know if that would work for you.
