Hello,

Is there bests practices to virtualize plug-in's for Internet Explorer?
The fact is in our company we have a lot applications wich use the same plug-in but not with the same version and we have problems when those plug-ins are not upward compatible.
I'm about to create a package fo SILVERLIGTH and i would like to know if someone have already package it or can give me good advice.

Regards,

There are a couple of things

There are a couple of things that I do to make sure that my IE plugins work correctly in a layer:

-Make sure you capture on a clean machine (a VM is preferred)
-Make sure your VM has the version of IE that you are going to be using in your environment (for example, if your users are using IE 8 make sure that the VM has IE8).
-I use a VM that has Windows XP SP3 only (no other updates, .Net 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 (no other updates), and IE8 (no other updates)
-When I capture I do a "Single program capture" and I use: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe (just so I have a little more control)

I have captured Silverlight several times without any problems. Works great!

One thing to note is to have

One thing to note is to have IE load silverlight make sure the layer is active before IE is launched, many plugins will not be loaded into a browser after it's launched.

How do you ensure the plugin is only used by one IE version?

If I have an IE6 layer on a machine with IE8 on the base, how do I ensure that a plugin only works with the IE6 layer?

Capture the plugin to it's

Capture the plugin to it's own layer and isolate that layer from the OS.

NSCABInstaller activeX objects

Hello Jordan,

Would this allow me to have NS 6 NSCABInstaller files working with my IE6 layer only, and SMP 7 NSCABInstaller files working with the IE8 base only?

If SMP 7 was installed in the

If SMP 7 was installed in the base or virtualized with "Hide from other Layers" and "Hide other layers from this layer" then yes it should work.
