Spypee, virus' of this nature haven't been in the wild or quite some time. The most common ones would change all of your .doc or .xls files to .exe just to cause as much havoc as possible. If you can let me know if it was specific document tpyes or actually ALL files that have been changed, I amy be able to help you narrow this down.
The windows files of course can be recovered by a reinstall or recover. As for the data files, were they all on the system drive or did it make it to any of your back-up drives? I've seen about everything coe through my org but nothing destructive since about 2003. You may have a very old virus such as the w32.blebla.b.worm. Let me know what you find out and I'll help where I can.
