Noob question here. I just downloaded and installed SEP Small Business Edition on a win2008 server (no clients created as yet). I then downloaded an "eicar.com" virus test file on the server and did not receive any warning or message of it being a virus. How can I test the server to see if it is working and protecting the server from viruses? Am I missing something obvious?

Did you install SEP Small Business client or console on the server?

I tested eicar on my Small Business client and it is detecting it correctly.
Regarding your case my suspects are these:

    1. SEP Small Business client is not installed on that machine
    or
    2. Auto-Protect is disabled
    or
    3. Auto-Protect actions are set to "Leave alone"

    Could you verify this?

Before installing the SEP client on your server, be sure to check out the Best Practices for Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection on Windows Servers KB.

I guess I made the assumption that when I installed the software, that it installed a client as well as the server console. Once I installed the client, it found the eicar test virus.

    Thank you for your help!
