Vista Imaging and Sysprep
Hi Everyone
Up until now the organization I work for has strictly been supporting Windows XP Professional, this includes:
User Support
Desktop Support
Image Creation and Deployment
Troubleshooting.
etc...
With the advent of Windows 7 around the corner, I need to know everything there is to know about Imaging Windows Vista.
This is the most important thing we are currently able to do with regard to making windows XP images.
We have a single image containing multiple drivers for different models of Desktop PC made by 2 different manufacturers.
Can this be done in Vista?
What considerations need to be taken into account when capturing and deploying the Vista Master Image using Ghost.
Our organization currently has MAK and KMS activation for Vista, is there any way to preserve the activated state on the images?
What are the implications of an MAK activated image versus a KMS activated image?
PLEASE HELP!!!

Why is this so difficult?
First of all, with Windows 7 around the corner, why are you wasting time with Vista?
Just go to the Microsoft website and download the copious information available to you for all aspects of Windows 7 migration. Microsoft are very keen to encourage users to move to Windows 7, so there is no shortage of information at all levels free to download.
For a start, grab a copy of the Windows Automated Install Kit (WAIK) for Windows 7. This is a significantly improved tool compared to anything previously made available for XP, and simplifies the integration of new drivers and support for different hardware platforms. The company I am currently at, is an early adopter for Windows 7, and are using the WAIK to support over 20 different hardware platforms.
MAK and KMS are supported as for Vista, and you can research the benefits and features of either scheme by simply looking at the Microsoft licencing information. Mr GOOGLE will also give you plenty to look at if you ask him nicely.
Also, depending on your deployment environment, don't ignore or overlook the tools that Microsoft provide - Imagex in my experience gives smaller images than Ghost as it excludes content that is unnecessary in an image. If you use SMS or SCCM, you can also handle image deployment through these tools.
So go ahead and do some research according to your needs!!

Ok what about Linux
Hi EdT
I know I didn't mention this earlier, but there is a very good chance that we will be installing Ubuntu on the same systems as a Dual Boot option with Windows 7.
If Microsoft ImageX is the direction I should be looking at, will it support Linux Partitions?
Linux with ImageX
Microsoft's technet article on ImageX, under the Limitations section, says the following:
You can mount an image only from Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Vista.
And from a not reliable source:
WIM is a Windows Imaging format, and you will not be able to create an image of a Linux OS.
Thanks tkight
Thanks for the info
Much appreciated :)
