VM backup fails with VDS error

Created: 10 Jan 2013 | 3 comments

We are backing up a VM ESX 5.0 environment that has a hand full of Windows 2008 R2 clients fail. Vcenter says:

An error occurred while quiescing the virtual machine. See the virtual machine's event log for details.

The only error in the system log is: unexpected failure. error code D@0101004. We found there was not much room left on the guest so we added more disk and we still failed.

Any hints where to look to next?

If you're getting errors on the vcenter server I recommend investigating from that end rather than NetBackup.

I agree with revaroo.  The error is coming from the system, not netbackup.

If they are application servers (have SQL or similar installed and running) it may be that that causes the failure as it is unable to quiesce the aplication

You can disable application quiesce by following this tech note:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH141518

Option B usually works

Hope this helps
