VMDK Disk not aligned

Created: 26 Oct 2012 | 8 comments

I am working with both VMware and Netapp on this issue and when I run the scan on my Symantec Messaging Gateway vmdk its showing that it isn't aligned properly on the disks. If I try to run the manual alignment tool provided by Netapp or the P2V tool on the vmdk it basically blows up the vm and the vm doesn't start which I expected. How can we get this vmdk into alignment? I tried this with both version 10 and 9.5 and have the same misaligned disk issue.

We do not support the alignment process. Your best bet is to perform a full backup and build a new VM to restore the backup to.

I've used the ovf creater in Symantec_Messaging_Gateway_VMimage_10.0.0-7_Linux_Int.zip in the past to deploy this appliance should I be using the following to build the vm?Symantec_Messaging_Gateway_OSrestore_10.0.0-7_Linux_Int.iso

Yes, that works fine. Personally, I prefer building the VM manually and booting it from our osrestore .iso file.

I've been trying this for the past hour or so and not getting anywhere I'm following the http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5741 installation guide, I've got Symantec_Messaging_Gateway_OSrestore_10.0.0-7_Linux_Int.iso downloaded up and uploaded to a data store I'm running vSphere 5 I follow the install instructions even though they are out of order and if you do it the exact way its in the doc you dont get the option to use the virtual machine version 7 hardware (you have to go to custom then choose) but that's beside the point I get the vm installed and now go to boot it. I get the install routine etc and it looks like all is good to go but when it reboots I get an error message "Error 15: File not found" press any key to continue... This is off a brand new install not an upgrade, I've seen some kb articles regarding this message if you upgrade but I'm doing a brand new install

It almost looks like the .iso didn't get fully downloaded. Have you compared the file size to what is reported on https://fileconnect.symantec.com?

Dang it I knew I should have checked the sha1 checksums. They didn't match so I'm redownloading again, on a side note I found a new sha1/md5 verifier that's quite nice.

Well I got the iso downloaded and the vm built but when I boot to the cd and it installs it installs so that its misaligned. If I try to run the align tool I end up with a unbootable vm. Any other suggestions?

Are you using a thick provision or thin provision? If the disk is misaligned from the get-go, it sounds like there are some issues with the fibre connection between the ESXi server and the NetApp filers.
